Dragon Stone

Looking around the divided and wild dragon lands, it can be easy to forget that this, and indeed much of were once part of the sprawling Draconic Empire. If you dig below the surface, however, you will find strange ruins built of a mysterious material the likes of which are almost never found above ground.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Since no natural vein of dragon stone has ever been found, its only source is the ruins the dragons left behind, and the depreciating palaces they still dwell in. It is found in block and brick shapes, with size and patterns depending on where it was found and what use it served in the building. Dragon stone appears glossy and black, but up close it has a gritty texture, like thousands of tiny bits of glass were compressed.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Dragon stone was built to withstand the might of the dragons and their enemies. This means it is very strong, highly durable, immune to most or all breath weapons (dependent on purity), and magic resistant. Because it was created for the construction of impressive palaces, fortresses, and monuments, it is easily carvable and seems to meld into the exact shape the artist has in mind.

Geology & Geography

Dragon stone is (theoretically) found all over the continent. It can only be found in one of two places now: in buried ruins that must be mined too, or the lairs of the remaining dragons. Mining for dragon stone may be the less risky of the two, but it is still quite dangerous, as the ruins are buried deep and often the most accessible ones are covered in sand or other loose sediment which make cave-ins and landslides a massive risk.

Origin & Source

It is believed that dragonstone never existed naturally, and was instead created by the dragons to build their palaces. The specifics of the stones immunities support this argument.   If dragonstone is a naturally occurring stone that the dragons mined or enchanted, it's ore is either unrecognisable or buried too deep for current mining methods to reach.
Odor
ruins are often contanimated with elements of where they were buried, but pristine dragon stone has no scent
Taste
slightly smokey, with a sandstone like texture
Color
pure dragon stone is glossy and black, through impure variations can be dark grey, purple, blue, red, or green
Common State
solid

'Dragon stone appears glossy and black, but up close it has a gritty texture, like thousands of tiny bits of glass were compressed.' Ooo it sounds so pretty. I bet it glitters slightly when the light catches it right.
