Government Officials

The people who keep governments around the world running: government officials. They carry out orders from the central government, ensure operations keep running smoothly, and even make local decisions. Especially in the case of scribes and advisors, government officials can be a real force behind the throne. This is only made easier by the apparent disdain and disregard most citizens have for them.

Career

Qualifications

A government official must be able to both follow orders and be able to make their own rulings fitting with official rulings. Loyalty, efficiency, and good organizational skills are all highly valued skills for government officials. Most scribes work for a government in some capacity and a much larger percent of government officials are literate than the sovereignty as a whole.

Career Progression

While it varies greatly from sovereignty to sovereignty in most sovereignties officials are promoted based on skill and actions up to a certain point where the only option for progression is hereditary right or election. Plenty of officials get around these restrictions by becoming invaluable to those in that position and making them their figurehead.

Other Benefits

Government officials have a distinct advantage in situations related to the government. Oftentimes officials are able to get away with much more than most citizens either by virtue of being an official or through being able to cover things up. In many sovereignties becoming a government official is one of the only ways for those not of noble birth to attain any real political power. The focus on scribes and education in governmental subjects results in most officials being from the middle class.

Perception

Social Status

Despite being fairly well educated and receiving good pay, government officials aren't regarded the most favorably by many common people. Often they are seen as mindless people who simply follow the orders of their higher-ups. In sovereignties where the government is not well respected or where revolutions are ongoing, local officials are popular scapegoats. Oftentimes though they are well enough respected even if some commoners doubt if they understand the value of physical labor and their contributions are often underestimated.
