Ulir

Sovereign Ulir (a.k.a. the actor that made an empire)

Through my performances I tell our history and from our history I create our future.
— Ulir
Ulir, one of the two founders of New Cadrial was once a simple actor of no great renown. By all accounts he was an excellent actor but had no exceptional skill at it. When the Cadrial Empire went to war with Zhaliya he was conscripted. His athleticism and weapon skill he had gained through acting served him well in the army and he gained a respectable rank. Returning home, he found that his time in the army had elevated his acting skills improving his stage fighting and giving him a stage presence that he had before lacked.

As the empire crumbled around him Ulir began preforming more and more historical plays about the former power and majesty of Cadrial. He was invited to preform one such play at the Ciral Playhouse where he came to the attention of a noble named Realin. She was attempting to keep the crumbling sovereignty together and saw the potential of Ulir's passion and aura.

Realin by Hero Forge
He began preforming and even writing plays under her patronage emphasizing Cadrian history, culture, and unity. After the empire dissolved, he and Realin advocated for it to be rebuilt. Realin put together an army to help reunify the sovereignty by force while Ulir continued writing and acting in plays focusing on the Cadrians common heritage and history. He would often preform plays or short poems with some acting or dance elements to inspire the army before battle.

Ulir's plays grew in popularity as Realin's army conquered more and more territory. Several times other groups were so inspired by Ulir's plays that they willingly joined New Cadrial. After Realin reconquered Cadrial's capital, she and Ulir were married and he began to take on more administrative tasks as well as his acting and writing. Now they reign together as co-sovereigns of New Cadrial. Ulir's writings have turned more towards writing about New Cadrial although he still incorporates a lot of references to the empire and themes from his older works as he worries that after he and his wife die that their renewed sovereignty might die with them.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

As Ulir's aged he has experienced lots of joint pain which has only worsened the older he's gotten. He's cut back on the number and length of performances he's given as the pain has gotten worse and has instead focused more on writing and ruling. His body is still in good shape from years of Cadrian theatre and serving in the army.

Apparel & Accessories

Ulir often wears elaborate clothes reminiscent of traditional Cadrain theatre costumes. He wears a lot of dark red and gold, the colours of the Cadrial Empire and New Cadrial.

Mental characteristics

Sexuality

Ulir has only expressed attraction to women

Personality Characteristics

Virtues & Personality perks

Ulir is very energetic even in the face of difficult or boring tasks. Even while embroiled in political struggles he maintains an infectious air of enthusiasm. In contrast to the more cynical Realin, Ulir always tries to see people's best traits and help bring those out.

Vices & Personality flaws

Because of his bright and energetic reputation, Ulir feels that he must project these at all times even when he's tired or stressed. He is also prone to overworking himself, especially when inspiration strikes. In his work as an actor and writer he has often glossed over the reality of situations, glorifying the Cadrial Empire and Cadrian and associated cultures to advance his cause.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Ulir and Realin have formed an alliance through marriage. While both loves the other and they share a deep bond, their relationship is not romantic. Instead Ulir has a romantic partner, Aral, and Realin has little inclinations towards romantic relationships.

Mannerisms

Ulir has always found body language, especially facial expressions, difficult to understand and do. Part of what drew him to theatre was that theatre encouraged exaggerated body language. Even as co-sovereign he tends to be very expressive with his body language as a callback to his theatre training and because he finds it easier.

Nice read. Quite interesting to have performances have such a big impact on the people even to the point of reuniting an empire.

Feel free to check my new world Terra Occidentalis if you want to see what I am up to!

I love the cover art. The fact that they re-united the empire partly through "remember the good old days" is a nice touch. A bit more about their early life might have been nice.   Couple quick editing notes. in the opening quote i think it should be "through," in in the "physical condition" section i would change beginning to "As Ulir has aged..." for slightly better flow. Your background choice is cool, but does make some of the part not in text boxes a bit hard to read depending on how the fiber grid and the text line up.

Feel free to stop by some of my WorldEmber articles if you want. My favorites are The Book of the Unquiet Dead, Outpost of the Moons, and The Emerald Hills. Feedback is always appreciated.

Thank you. Hopefully all the spelling errors have been fixed now. On my monitor the black text stands out well against the background; I'll have to tinker around with it a bit more.

Nice article! I like the importance of theatre and propaganda into rebuilding the empire :D I'm guessing that in your world, theatre and actors don't have the bad reputation they had in our own history and that it's not scandalous for someone with Ulir's new status to continue to act?

Thank you. Like the real world the status of actors varies from country to country, but the Cadrians love their theatre, part of why Ulir's tactics were so effective. They'd probably be more upset if he completely stopped acting.

I liked the story, it has a very nice progression of his character, though I would always like to hear more about him. Could you elaborate on how his plays managed to avoid battles? Those must have been extremely influential. Is he remembered then not as an actor, but as a playwright and a ruler?

If you have some time, I would much appreciate your feedback on my entry for Adventure April: Carbon Copy Paradise

I love that his performances helped to reunite the empire and that he ended up becoming the co-sovereign. I also like that he does not have a romantic relationship with his wife, but one of deep respect.

Wonderful character (or maybe I should say: characters?). Technically you describe Ulir, but it's clear that Realin plays a significant role in his life. I like how they share a deep bond and complement each other. They are the same but differ significantly in matters such as the romantic side of the relationship.   It's sad and very realistic that he had to play less when his joint pains started to get worse. Also, the need to project his bright side is genuine... and probably adding to his burden and mental strain.   What was the most memorable thing about his songs? Was it the tone of his voice or the theatrical form which enchanted people? Or was it both?   Formatting-wise, adding some stuff to the sidebar could make the article feel less squished by the blank space. Also, there are a few typos, one of them in a quote.   Overall, an incredible story. Thanks for sharing that!
