Dwarves

Written by Mystic.m

Description

Bold and hardy, dwarves are known as skilled warriors, miners, and workers of stone and metal. Dwarves get along passably well with most other races. “The difference between an acquaintance and a friend is about a hundred years,” is a dwarf saying that might be hyperbole, but certainly points to how difficult it can be for a member of a short-lived race like humans to earn a dwarf’s trust. There are a few sub-races of dwarf found throughout the nations of Thuria.   The Dwarves are a proud and intelligent species. They have long ago banded together into a kingdom which has stood the test of time for as long as divinium existed. During their age of unity they decided to stay closed to other species for anything other then trade of their goods. They have made giant fortresses which now span into the greatest city of the continent, strong enough that not even the mother dragon could destroy it easily. They have made the reputation for themselves to be the greatest and wealthiest nation of the continent. With their unrivaled blacksmithing skill they have yet to be bested in their skill. They are also in charge of the worldwide most valuable currency which is accepted all over divinium and it is impossible to falsify their coins. They call them the Platinum Dwarven Coin. No matter where you are with but one of these coins you can live comfortably in any country for at least months or even years. Dwarfs have yet to find themselves in any wars other then against the demons where they have often sent their elite fighting forces for training purposes. Dwarves are not often seen outside their home faldwass, but some young dwarfs do leave their home to enjoy some adventure and thrill before returning to a life dedicated to being the greatest smiths in existence. In their culture one must always strive to be better, stagnation is frowned upon and useless dwarfs are seen as redundant and cast aside into the outside world so they may loose whatever has them be stagnant and they will only be accepted back once they prove that they have become better. They hold grudges for ages and generations even beyond their death if you offended them you and your kin will never be able to loose the grudge they have against you.

Subraces

Mountain Dwarves

Also known as shield dwarves, are the most common within Thuria, commonly seen around nations such as Asgard, Cimmeria, Hyboria, Hyperborea, Hyrkania, and Vanaheim. They are cynical and gruff people, but they are not, despite a reputation to the contrary, fatalistic. They still possess some hope for the future. Mountain dwarves take time to trust and even longer to forgive. Mountain dwarves are openly dismissive of magic. Mountain dwarves have skin that is fair or lightly tanned, with green or silvery blue eyes. They have long, light brown or red hair, growing white or gray with age. Females are slightly shorter and less heavy than males.

Hill Dwarves

Also known as gold dwarves, are aloof, confident, and sometimes the proudest of the dwarven subraces. They are both materialistic and ritualistic, valuing themselves and others by what they possess and by the reputation of their family. Hill dwarves are commonly found in areas of Thuria such as Aquilonia, Argos, Brythunia, Corinthia, and Ophir. Hill dwarves believe themselves culturally superior to their dwarven cousins. Hill dwarves have light brown or tanned skin and brown or hazel eyes, as well as black, gray, or brown hair.

Duergar Dwarves

Also known as gray dwarves; a grim and bitter subrace. They are pessimistic about their future and deeply cynical regarding the motives of others; because of this, Duergar rarely adventures out of their own free will and were instead exiled out of their own society. They are a dark and cruel race, who show no mercy to their foes and who took great pleasure in inflicting pain on others. Duergar is the rarest of the dwarven race, only in certain areas of The Border Kingdoms, Hyperborea, and the Underdark would you find a Duergar. They are typically bald, with females also lacking the capacity to grow facial hair. Many were also thinner than their dwarven brethren. Most obvious, however, was their dull gray skin and hair, often matched with an equally stoic expression.

Wild Dwarves

Also known as jungle dwarves, are not trusting of strangers and would avoid detection whenever possible. They have adopted a completely different social structure, leaving behind the more common clan-based approach. They formed hunting groups with very few fluid memberships and practiced polygamy. They could be seen within Amazonia, Kambuja, Kush, Shem, and Vendhya. Wild dwarves were smaller than most other dwarves but sturdy and well-muscled. They wore very little - if any - clothing and greased their tattoo-covered dark skin to keep away insects.

Character Build

Most dwarves are stout and muscular, but the rest of their features vary based on the subrace. All but the Duergar were capable of growing thick hair and beards, seen on both genders, and the wild dwarves used those and wove them to cover their mostly nude bodies.     Height Minimum: 145cm(4'7")
Height Maximum: 160cm(5'2")
