Disaster / Destruction
When the dragonsong war ended, magic died. All natural magic died, and only gifted magic remained, that granted by a god, or patron, that was strong enough to pierce whatever tear was in the veils of magic.
"Before the war, magic were everywhere. Farmers worked with 'dem Druids to make crops gorw year round, clothes mended magically, food an' wat'r purified by clerics and druids in the groves of the city innit?" - Buckwheat Brewbeard, Dwarf Brewmaster of the city of Neverwinters Hungry Horse tavern. "If you were not alive back then, allow me to illuminate you. You see, even non magical mortals, benefitted from the blessings of Mystra's Weave. For you see, it is theorized that healing was boosted, passively. A farmer, or a blacksmith, needn't have worried about bruises, or burns. They could push harder, work longer. This of course meant more being produced with less labor. Economic boon yes? But you would go to bed, and the next day be nearly good as new. This wouldnt regrow your leg of course, but a bruise or a break, easily. "Now, one day, a strange gust of wind, a rumble in the earth, perhaps a flash of light? Few who lived then could tell exactly what happened. But everyone can tell you what happened next. The farmers, black smiths, hunters went to bed, broken beaten and battered, and woke up the next day, in the same state. Worse even, bruises that had never gotten this bad less a man were dying. Thats what the commoners heard. That was their news that the world just died." - Vulmon Falar. High Elf of the conclaves of Knowledge, Baldur's Gate. " The cities? Pandemonium I would think. Magically enchanted items died instantly. Towers fell, cities outright sank! It all went to shit real fast like, especially for places like Waterdeep, and Thay. Oh Waterdeep... so much went wrong there." - Anonymous, Healer, female, in the city of Candle Keep. The Magic turned off. The passive healing, the cantrips, the spells, the magic items, the charms. It all turned off, overnight. Wizards spell books began to fade, as many of them were written in magical means. Sorcerers lost whatever was in their blood that made them special. Druids lost touch to Gaia. Bards couldnt weave a tale as before. Paladins, Rangers, anything with a hint of arcane was gone. Overngiht. There was one type of magic that still worked, though weakened, and not always, and not for everyone. Your Clerics, and your Warlocks. Gifted magic. Divine, Pacts, Bargained, whatever you want to call it, its all that worked. in 1604, the magic came back for everyone, sort of. The magic relics, didnt come back. The books, didnt refill, knowledge of countless centuries was lost, magic blades that reflected the histories of kingdoms, were just pieces of metal, if they were lucky. The towers stayed crumbled. Wounds sped up, going from months, to days. A week, a normal person could operate in a week. Light work, like farming, for a week straight, less work if you are really injured, and you will heal up fine. Magic seemed to be the same, mages could cast their big stuff once a week-ish it seemed. Magic items could be reinchanted and reverse engineered, it rarely worked, but there was a chance. Ancient magic items were found in temples, and tombs, whose magic was so strong, it protected some items inside, such things are the rarest of all items, and only the most powerful.
