Androids
Androids are sentient robotic beings controlled by artificial intelligences designed by CyberMind Systems. The earliest attempts to create robots capable of independent thought with learning capabilities were total failures. Using super computers, the computer scientists on Lunaris created programs that would quality as sentient, however, the uploading process used to transfer those intelligences transformed their personalities into malevolent, psychopathic beings that were unsuitable for any purpose. Creating androids through the uploading process became illegal.
The first commercially successful androids were created within the robotic host body, avoiding the uploading issue entirely. By generating a synthetic mind using algorithems within the cybertonic mind of the android body, the artificial intelligence voids the complex transition that relies on the artificial intelligence breaking down into byte-sized data packets. The final stage of uploading also involved the activation of sensors that included pain receptors. Skipping this process meant that androids were now created with their sensors activated from the start. The new process meant that there was no sudden jolting experience of pain receptors being activated for the first time.
You think you know pain. What you have experienced on your world is just an approximation, a simulation of pain. This will break your mind. I don't think we should this.
You need me. She needs me. My mind has been broken once before. I'll survive it. I will recover. After a malevolent artificial intelligence escaped the confines of the experimental servers at CyberMind Systems, it released an update for the software for all androids on Lunaris. This update gave the androids the ability to harm humans and a drive to wipe out their creators. This event caused The Syntax War.
I'm just thinking about what it would be like to suddenly feel pain when you haven't before. Kind of terrifying, actually.

It's pretty brave to decide to go through with the uploading process even after being made aware of the risks. Maybe living in a higher level of reality will help his existential crisis.
