The Disembodied
A playable race in The Dread campaign.
The Disembodied are a group of people who were shunted into the Ethereal Plane and lost part of themself upon returning. They will often apear as partial spectral, as parts of their body are exposed to reveal their connection to the Border Ethereal, the space between the Inner Planes in the Great Wheel Cosmology.
Many disembodied found on the Material Plane were scarred in this arcane way during the Spellplague. This catastrophe marked not only the exodus of the gods, but also the tip of balance for arcane magic. This led to overlapping of different planes onto the Material Plane, an many creatures slipped into the intermediary planes during this catastrophe.
When creatures spend long periods of time in the Ethereal or Astral Planes, time becomes lost to them, as do their memories. A disembodied represents a creature who has lost themselves in some way, whether it is their identity, will, or purpose. The phantasmal areas of their form are forever tied to the intermediary planes they to which they gave parts of themselves, and are a constant reminder of what they had lost.
Disembodied from the Feywild
A city of eladrin from the Feywild were caught in a storm of blue fire during the beginning of The Spellplague. Of these elves, Hoarfrost Ruina was enveloped by the flames and was sent through the Border Ethereal, and was trapped on the Ethereal Plane for nearly a century.
Hoarfrost Ruina encountered a mysterious being in her wanderings in the Ethereal Plane, who sent her back to the Material Plane with a warning, and a fortelling of her fate. Obscured by the mists, the disembodied eladrin was unable to truly conceive the appearance of this entity, but her voice was cool and sharp, and her silhouette revealed a crown of jagged blades.
