Gnomes

An old saying in the Dycides goes, “The elves grow the land, the dwarves sculpt the land, the halfling walks the land, and the land changes the gnome.” Gnomes are very mutable and changeable, and prone to whims and whimsy often looking for what is absurd or fun about a situation. Combined with their diminutive sizes, vibrant coloration, and lack of concern for the opinions of others, these attitudes have caused gnomes to be widely regarded by the other races as alien and strange. Gnomes, in turn, are often amazed how alike other common, civilized races are. It seems stranger to a gnome that humans and elves share so many similarities that the gnomes do not. Indeed, gnomes often confound their allies by treating everyone who is not a gnome as part of a single, vast non-gnome collective race.   In Old Dycides, the Fey influence in the Westwood is notoriously strong. People who wander there are said to be able to fall into the First World, the world defined by Fey magic. The Fey-Touched Gnomes all come from this forest, and their minds are even more eccentric than any others. The Forgeborn Gnomes are migrants from the southern stretches of Ethium. The Forgeborn couldn’t be more disconnected from their ancient roots, with mad minds of machines, gunpowder and domination over nature. Finally the endearing Wild Eye Gnomes gnomes bridge the gap, bringing joy and madness to any city or farm. Desperate to get one more word or thought in the conversation, Wild Eyes are always on the lookout for the next big risk to keep their hearts racing.   Wherever a gnome goes their mind sees things differently, always seeing a world with great potential. Potential for fun, mania, influence or dominance, it all depends on their perspective in the moment.
