Helltainted Tieflings

Those whose ancestry is linked to the nine hells and the devils within are classified as Helltainted. Helltainted in general have brisk direct attitudes and do less to hide that they are accepting what they cannot change. They tend to approach situations head on, knowing their actions will be what defines them. If it seems like this strategy doesn’t work they can become a shrewd negotiator, speaking with a measured grace, and are able to both gather information and make requests of strangers with some ease.  

Physical Description:

In the world of Tiefling there are few standards of appearance, coloration and appendages vary widely. The only constants are horns, and for the Helltainted, otherworldly strength and thick slightly scaled skin. Though not apparent at a glance, when one feels the skin of the Helltainted, it has an almost sharklike quality. That clingy nature tends to give them difficulties with fine dexterous activities, but their skin not sharp enough to actually cut a rope or other material.  

Society:

Even amongst a group oppressed there are those who put others below them. Those born with Hell’s strictures in their blood tend to manage themselves well in societies once they have proved themselves as reliable. Helltainted in turn feel comradery with each other and annoyance at tieflings that keep finding ways to besmirch the race. They tend to frustrate easily when an order is not followed so find it difficult to work with those without structure in their lives.  

Relations:

Since most cannot tell one Tiefling from another, they all usually get lumped in with negative stereotypes. Most races are careful to accept a Helltainted into a community, treating them like a timebomb waiting to go off. If someone understands their origin, Helltainted are treated fairly well, but most check any agreement or contract with a careful eye. This bias occasionally leads to inexperienced Helltainted with no legal expertise being asked to read over contracts regarding a third party. Dhampirs, Genieborn, and other part humans tend to be more sympathetic to Tieflings in general, sympathizing with their plight.  

Alignment and Religion:

Most assume Asmodeus is the one and only god of the Helltainted, but that is commonly incorrect. While Asmodeus appeals to the Helltainted, just as many worship any other God, usually ones associated with a form of justice or organization such as Abadar, Iomedae, or even Torag. In general Helltainted rely on systems and societal constructs to get by and tend a bit more towards a lawful life. They constantly also seek to improve on law to give themselves a safer place in the world.  

Adventurers:

Helltainted are more drawn to battle and using force than any other Tiefling. They are comfortable in the front line in roles like Fighters or Champions. In Kervosh, groups of Helltainted forced out of society are assembling and troupes of Helltainted Barbarians are appearing more commonly as well. For those that become casters, it is usually their sorcerous blood that calls them. Status, fame or glory are usually prime motivators for a Helltainted to take on the mantle of adventurer.  

Stats Block

Ability Score: (+2 Str, +2 Wis, -2 Dex) Helltainted are infused with infernal strength and awareness, but lack quick reflexes.   Type: Helltainted are outsiders with the native subtype.   Size: Helltainted are Medium creatures and thus receive no bonuses or penalties due to their size.   Speed: Helltainted have a base speed of 30 feet.   Languages: Helltainted begin play speaking Common and Infernal. Helltainted with high intelligence scores can choose from the following: Abyssal, Dwarven, Elven, Gnome, Grippli, Halfling, and Orc.   Scaled Skin: The skin of Helltainted provides some energy resistance, but is also as hard as armor. Choose one of the following energy types: cold, electricity, or fire. A Helltainted gains resistance 5 in the chosen energy type and also gains a +1 natural armor bonus to AC.   Darkvision: Helltainted can see perfectly in the dark for up to 60 feet.   Fiendish Sorcery: Helltainted sorcerers with the Infernal bloodlines treat their Charisma score as 2 points higher for all sorcerer class abilities.   Stubborn Helltainted gain a +2 racial bonus on Will saving throws to resist spells and spell-like abilities of the enchantment (charm) and enchantment (compulsion) subschools. In addition, if a Helltainted fails such a save, it receives another save 1 round later to prematurely end the effect (assuming the spell or spell-like ability has a duration greater than 1 round). This second save is made at the same DC as the first. If the Helltainted has a similar ability from another source (such as a rogue’s slippery mind class feature), it can only use one of these abilities per round, but can try the other on the second round if the first reroll ability fails.   Skilled: Helltainted gain a +2 racial bonus on Diplomacy checks.
