GreyMane

GreyMane is a compound that is derived from Abathian crystals. This compound enhances neural acitivty memory, learning, and concentration. It also leads to heightened senses and euphoria. Unfortunately, it is highly addictive and prolonged use leads to severe neural degradation and psychosis.   It was discovered when miners who were harvesting Abathian crystals, which at the time were used for decoratative purposes, constantly found themselves in an altered state and wanting to be with the crystals. The mining company was happy that the workers were working long hours without begging for extra pay. Eventually, they investigated and learned that very fine crystal dust had a mimicking, similar to dopamine. Immediately shifting focus, the company pulled their chemical teams in and learned how to refine the crystals to create an extremely potent compound, currently known as GreyMane.   Inevidably, users end up with a condition commonly known as "brain-drain". Users find that they need increasing levels of GreyMane to get the same high and the heightened level of congnition. Unfortunately, the user's brain also starts to degrade. Small sections of the brain are found to have lesions and small gaps between the normal folds of the grey matter. Eventually, these sections enlarge, leaving large gaps - spaces in the user's brain that are utterly irreversible.   "Drainers" always find themselves in a cycle that they cannot escape. Similar to other stimulants, their body chemistry gets acclimated to the current level of exposure and thus they require more of the stimulant. Unlike other stimulants, GreyMane also degrades the brain, meaning that the users are truly losing mental capacity.    Uncomfortably, certain organizations actually encourage their people to partake in the drug. Certain pilots, marksman, analysts, and others have teams that monitor them, and work to control the user's dosage. However, despite the fact that they can prolong the user's lifespan for several years, they all eventually succumb.
