Session Five: I Fought The Law And The Law Won!
General Summary
The session opens with the party exiting the Trollskull Manor and witnessing the after effects of a fireball explosion. On the ground were several dead bodies charred by the blast. Across the street one of the small buildings was on fire. Cora ran into the building to see if she could locate any survivors while Sneatcha walked over to the bodies still drinking his ale to see if any one of them maybe still alive. Valna crosses the street with Sneatcha to investigate the dead gnome.
Nyx, looking around, noticed three potential witnesses to the explosion and made her way over to Falla Lefaliir, the owner of Corellion’s Crown, to see what she saw. In talking with Falla, she told Nyx she saw a cloaked man which appeared injured take something off the gnome’s body and ran off looking around as someone may have followed him. Nyx asked Falla if she could probe her mind to get a description of the cloaked man. Falla, reluctant at first, agree and Nyx gets a look of the cloaked man. After talking with Falla, Nyx approaches Martem Treg, a small boy, who appeared to be in a state of shock. Nyx is able to get Martem to come around after seeing his friends killed in the explosion. Martem tells Nyx after the explosion he hid behind a rain barrel and heard something fall down the gutter. He shows Nyx a necklace with two beads on it. Nyx asks Martem if she could have the necklace as it may help find out who killed Martem’s friends. Martem agrees and hands over the necklace to Nyx. After gathering the necklace, Nyx approaches the final witness, Jezrynne Hornraven. Jezrynne tells Nyx she saw what looked like a man but not quite a man but more like a puppet hurl something which caused the explosion from the rooftop. Nyx probes Jezrynne’s mind to get a description of the puppet like creature.
Sneatcha notices there were two men in leather armor among the dead and made his way over to them. He kicks the bodies to make sure they are dead and then begins to search the bodies. Upon his search of the bodies, Sneatcha notices both the men have serpent tattoos on their necks which shows there are Zhentarians. Sneatcha grabs the gold off the bodies and makes his way over to the dead halflings which appeared to be street performers in a state of performing when they were caught up in the explosion. Looking around the bodies Sneatcha finds loose gold pieces which appear to have been scattered from the halfings’ tip bucket. With no shame, Sneatcha takes the gold pieces from the ground.
Valna examines the dead gnome and notices it is the same gnome whom was following them the day prior. Valna searches his body and notices all his pockets were turned inside out and five gem stones and a dagger lay beside the gnome’s body. Excited in what she found, Valna frantically began to call Nyx over to the body. Nyx, after finishing up with Jezrynne, approaches Valna to see what she wants. Valna tells Nyx what she had discovered. Nyx examines the dagger and determines it is magical. Nyx pockets the dagger for later examination and heads to the rooftop to see if she could locate where the puppet like creature was. Valna turns her attention to the gemstones and picks them up.
Cora made her way through the house looking for signs of life but does not find anyone. She makes her way back out of the residence as the flames of the fire begin to die down and extinguish. When she steps outside the residence, she notices the city watch approaching the scene and makes her way over to Valna to collect her as Valna’s description was released as a possible suspect in the murder of the Morrells. Valna and Cora make a quick retreat into the Trollskull Manor while Sneatcha, noticing the guards walks back to the porch of the Manor to watch the guards.
On the rooftop, Nyx finds a small clockwork gear which represents the god of Gond. After pondering a minute, Nyx decided she would travel to the church of Gond to see if they may have a lead on the puppet like creature.
Sneatcha watches as the city watch locks down the crime scene. A few minutes later, gryphon riders show up above as the city guard arrives with two investigators. The investigators walk around to different people in the crowd and talk to them. The city guard begins to collect the dead and they separate the bodies of the gnome and Zhentarians from the other victims. Sneatcha watch as a human male with robes with scars all over his body appear and walks over to the bodies. He seemed to be whispering something to the bodies. The investigators approach the robed man and talk to him. After they were finished, the investigators walk over to the Trollskull Manor and knock on the front door.
Cora ushered Valna up to her room and as she come back downstairs she heard the knock on the door. She answers the door and she is greeted by the investigators. The lead investigator introduces himself as Barnibus Blastwind and he is with the Watchful Order of Magists and Protectors. Barnibus turns to the other investigator and introduces him as Saeth Cromley, a sergeant with the city guard. Barnibus asks Cora if she could answer some questions for him. Cora agrees and lets them in the manor. They take a seat in the tavern and Barnibus asks Cora what she saw. Cora explains she did not see the explosion and only saw the aftermath. She explains she went into the build across the street to see if anyone was in the building but found none. After being satisfied with Cora’s answers, Barnibus asks to speak with Valna as witnesses told him she was looking at the gnome and seemed to find something as she was shouting to Nyx to come and look. Cora reluctantly gets Valna. Cora tells Valna to stick to what she knows and do not offer more information than what is asked. Valna is greeted by Barnibus and Saeth while she takes a seat. Barnibus begins to question Valna. Panicking Valna began to change her answers and talk cryptically. Cora, seeing Valna was in trouble, tried to cover for Valna’s missteps but ended up failing. Barnibus, seeing Valna had information he was seeking, had Cora escorted to the bar under guard. Sneatcha returned to the bar from outside and witnessed the exchange. He tried to cover as well for Valna but Barnibus did not buy the story Sneatcha was telling. He had Sneatcha escorted to Cora to wait until he was finished with Valna. Valna, cracking under the pressure of the questioning, placed herself at Morrell Manor. Just when Valna was about to crack under Barnibus’s intense questioning, Sneatcha spoke up and told Barnibus the truth as to what happened sparing Valna from further questioning. Barnibus satisfied he received the truth determined Valna had been withholding information which was hampering his investigation. He issued her a fine and edict stating she would be available to questioning at any time. Valna paid the fine to Barnibus and then Barnibus and Saeth left the tavern.
At the House of Inspired Hands, the church of Gond, Nyx enters and approaches one of the priestess of Gond, a dragonborn named High Seeker Valetta Valbis. Nyx asks Valetta if she could speak to her in private. Valette brings Nyx to a private room where Nyx informs Valetta of what happened outside the Trollskull Manor. Valetta tells Nyx she knows of a clockworks creature which resides at the church but he has not left his attic workshop for over a year. Valette takes Nyx upstairs to talk with Nim. They discover a lock on Nim’s door which wasn’t there before. Fearing Nim may be hiding something, Valette allows Nyx to pick the lock. Valette and Nyx make their way into the workshop. Nim, a nimblewright, admitted he was lonely and created a friend which looked like him. He tells Nyx his friend escaped a few weeks ago from the attic and he does not know where it is. He gives Nyx a device he created which would track his friend if they were close to it. Valette, upset at Nim, offers Nyx a reward for the destruction of Nim’s friend. Valette tells Nim they will be taking his tools away from him as punishment. Valette and Nyx leave Nim’s workspace and head downstairs. Valette asks Nyx if she could help her with something else since she was able to communicate with Nim. Nyx agrees and she takes Nyx down to the discovery hall. Inside the hall is a goblin staring at one of the small models of the Grand Temple of Gond. Valette tells Nyx the goblin arrived three days ago and he has not left. No one in the church can communicate with the goblin and asks Nyx if she would assist the goblin in finding shelter. The goblin said his name is Friac and he was looking for someone in Waterdeep but got distracted by the wonderful inventions in the Church. Nyx noticed Friac had a mark of a protector and offered to have him tag along back to the Trollskull Manor to discuss a few things. Nyx tell Valette she will be able to provide lodging for Friac and takes the money Valette offered to Friac. They make their way back to the Trollskull Manor where Nyx introduces Friac to the party and tells the about Nim’s friend.
The party decided to track down Nim’s friend as it may have information on where the Stone of Golorr was. Nyx activated the device Nim gave her and they traveled into the North Ward and stopping at the Gralhund Villa where the device showed it was at. After walking around the fence to the villa, the party heard sounds of battle coming from inside the villa walls. The party decides to enter the villa and manage to get over the wall. Inside the wall, they notice several guards were dead on the villa grounds. Nyx, Cora and Valna decided to enter the main manor house through a balcony on the second floor while Friac and Snegthar approached the manor from the ground floor.
Valna, Cora and Nyx make it up the balcony and Nyx opens it. Inside they see a human male in breast plate with a half-orc. Both doors out of the bedroom were barricaded. Since both the human and half-orc were evil, Valna, Cora and Nyx attack. They take down the half-orc and notice the human male was protecting the back door out of the bedroom call while calling Cora, Valna and Nyx Zhentarians scum.
Friac and Sneatcha enter a small barrack and witness two Zhentarians slaughter a guard. Friac and Sneatcha attack the Zhentarians as they moved into the barrack. They trade blows with the Zhentarians but eventually gain the upper hand and defeat them. Sneatcha steps back out of the barrack and noticed several gryphon riders circling the villa. Sneatcha shouts out they have company and hides with Friac trying not to get caught.
On the other end of the bedroom someone was trying to break down barricaded door. Nyx drops the human male as the other door breaks open revealing the human male, known as Urstal Floxin, which took the stone off the dead gnome earlier in the day. Cora casts entanglement but the spell encompasses the whole room slowing down everyone. Valna engages in combat with Urstal but was bested by Urstal knocking her unconscious from her wounds. Nyx and Cora fight off Urstal and heal Valna. They hear Sneatcha shout out and see the city watch breaking into the villa with gryphon riders above. They decide to have Valna and Cora go into Nyx familiar pocket while Nyx investigates what is in the room which the other male was trying to protect. Nyx is able to get the door open and inside they find Lady Yalah Gralhund in breastplate defending her three children. Yalah coldly looks at Nyx and asked if she was part of the Zhentarians which Nyx said she wasn’t. Looking past Nyx and seeing Urstal dead she asked if it was Nyx hand work and Nyx said it was. As they were talking one of the small children runs past Yalah and into the bedroom to see if her father, Sir Orond Gralhund, was alive. Seeing her father dead she starts to cry. Inside the bedroom Yalah showed no emotion towards the danger her daughter was in. Nyx asks the girl if she saw anything and the little girl said her mom took a stone from the mean man and gave it to the funny man before they were locked in the bedroom. Yalah decides to make a deal with Nyx and tells her she will allow her passage out of the villa if she agrees to leave. Nyx agrees as the city watch arrive in the room. Yalah tells the watch as the noble family of the villa, she is offering her word Nyx had nothing to do with the attack and she help kill the Zhentarian attackers. The watch takes Yalah’s word and escorts Nyx out of the villa without any question.
Sneatcha and Friac see Nyx leave and decide they will try to sneak out. They decide the best course would be to enter the manor house and climb out a window. Sneatcha and Friac were able to sneak past the watch back into the manor house. They pass several rooms until they arrive at the rear of the house. Entering the room, they discovered it was a family library. They did a quick search and found the Gralhund family book and two fake book chests. Deciding they were pushing their luck, they decided to leave through the window. As they were climbing out the window they were discovered by a gryphon rider but were able to lose it as it took to the air.
The session ended with everyone back at the Trollskull Manor for the night.
