Session Forty-Seven: The Mother Of All Explosions
General Summary
The group prepares for Despayr as he comes raging from the chamber to the north of the closed portal. Stepping from the chamber the group sees Despayr has under gone some sort of change. His scales has transformed into a translucent and dark color. Despayr snears as he sees the group and unleashes his breath weapon which is a cone of dark smoke. The group is hit and can feel a part of them being drained. Nyx transforms into a dragon as Valna, Galrik and Sneatcha move in to attack. Sneatcha lands several solid blows as Despayr counterattacks. Tranquility glows as it detects the presence of a shadow creature as Valna lands several blows. Despayr throws his tail at Galrik and Valna striking them. Several blows are landed on Despayr and his scales change to a smoke like color as it appears the damage from the group is grounded to an unknown source.
Sneatcha lands a series of blows which causes Despayr to redirect his attacks landing several counterblows stunning Sneatcha. Valna and Galrik step in and connect with Nyx jumping on Despayr unleashing several blows causing Despayr to stagger. Nyx’s familiar channels the silver fire gifted by Sylune healing Sneatcha and unstunning him. Sneatcha reengages with Galrik and land more blows as Despayr desperately tries to fend off the attack. Nyx launches another attack on Despayr killing him. Despayr collapses to the ground as his body transform into a dark ash which begins to scatter. Nyx finds a small locket among the ash which looks like the locket Alokkair wanted returned. Nyx picks up the locket and the group returns to Alokkair’s lair.
The lich looks at the locket Nyx presents to him. Alokkair greedly takes the locket as he confirms Nyx has fulfilled their agreement. Nyx press Alokkair save travels in his crypt and which Alokkair agrees to as long as they leave him to his own devices. The group leaves Alokkair and makes their way to Despayr’s lair.
Inside Despayr’s lair the group finds several large stone chests. On the opposite wall from the chests the group sees what appears to be a gate. On the opposite side it appears to be a large warehouse with several wooden crates. The group opens the stone chests finding Despayr’s hoard. Nyx and Sneatcha examine the gate to try to determine where the gate leads to. They discover where the gate leads to is not far from where they are as the magic in the area has been weakened and the lay lines were redirected.
After gathering all of Despayr’s hoard the group decided to go through the gate. The group is transported to a large warehouse with stone walls and a large double door at the opposite wall. Several of the crates were opened. Nyx and Galrik recognize the crates as the same which were in Shadowdale (items created by several smiths in Waterdeep and Fraic). The group hears the sounds of a battle horn which is distinct to the Zhentarian. The group peers out the doors and see a castle to the north of the warehouse and to the west are two large pillars. Zentarian battle battalions are marching through the pillars and being transported to a location on the other side. Nyx examines the pillars and discovered the Zhentarians are being gated into the coliseum where the Dragon Bowl is being held in Waterdeep. Nyx and Sneatcha develop a plan to try to destroy the pillars to stop the remaining forces of the Zhentarian from going through. Nyx tells Sneatcha by destroying one of the pillars it will disrupt the gate. Sneatcha calculates the amount of destruct needed and asks Nyx if she has a fireball spell which would help but they need some more power to it. Galrik and Sneatcha search the remaining crates and find three crates with ten bombs which Friac had crafted. Sneatcha and Nyx decide they will use the horn of Valhalla to summon a group of barbarians which they will strap the bombs to and have them attack the pillar. Nyx will the use a delay fireball to detonate the bombs which will destroy the pillar. Nyx blows the horn and Sneatcha attaches the bombs to the three barbarians which appear. Nyx assessed the distance with Sneatcha and they don’t think the barbarians will get to the pillar without being discovered. Cora volunteers to use her travel through plants spell to enter a tree by the warehouse to a tree near the pillar. Cora can transport the barbarians with her and then she will return.
Nyx directs the barbarians to attack the pillars and cast delayed fireball as Cora and the barbarians sneak out of the warehouse into a tree. Nyx and Sneatcha watch them as they notice one of the commanders for the Zhentarian sees them. The commander walks by the warehouse door when Nyx springs an attack on him with Galrik cutting him down in time without sounding an alarm. Cora drops off the barbarians as they rush the pillars causing some confusion with the Zhentarian soliders. Cora jumps back through the tree and arrives back at the warehouse where grabs the group and teleports away to a hillside overlook the castle.
On the hillside they hear a moment of silence before the night sky is lit up in a bright light as the fireball spell denotates the bomb. The noise of the blast hits the group as a secondary blast erupts as the magical gate fails and unleashes the raw magical energy. Dirt, stone, wood, body parts and metal come raining down near the group as the combined energy from the explosion leaves a crater leveling the castle and surrounding area. None of the remaining Zhentarian army survived the blast. The explosion destroys the lay lines causing the area to be devoid of magic. The group turns their attention to Waterdeep and teleport back to the Trollskull Manor to stop the invasion of Waterdeep.
