Session Forty-Three: The Massacre in Shadowdale
General Summary
As the group prepares to look for the Watcher’s Knoll Galrik and Nyx plans a quick trip to Shadowdale to get a few supplies and check out the area to see what type of presense the Zhentarian has. Nyx and Galrik travel to the outskirts of Shadowdale. They notice a heavy Zhentarian presence in Shadowdale with patrols watching over the citizens. Nyx disguised herself and approached the town square with Galrik. A Zhentarian patrol stops them and asks for their business. Nyx tells the Zhentarian patrol she here with her fighter as they are traveling through and decided to stop and rest. The Zhentarian patrol tells them to mind their business in Shadowdale and allows them to proceed. Nyx looks for the local tavern and finds the Old Skull Inn. Nyx and Galrik approach the entrance to the Inn and are stopped by two bouncers at the door. Nyx introduces herself as her alter ego and tells the bouncers she is traveling with her pit fighter Galrik. The bouncer tells Nyx there are no fights since the Zhentarian took over but there is a representive of the Taskmaster at the Inn looking for fighters for an upcoming game. Nyx tips the bouncer for the information and the bouncer arranges for Nyx to meet the tavern owner Jhaele Silvermane. Nyx and Galrik enter the tavern and make their way to the bar.
At the bar Nyx orders drinks for herself and Galrik. Nyx asks the bartender what has been going on. He tells Nyx ever since Lord Mourngrym Amcathra allowed the Zhentarians to enter Shadowdale unopposed the Zhentarians set up shop and appears to be looking for something. Lord Amcathra allowed the Zhentarians to setup marshal law and they control the town. When asked what the Zhentarians were looking for the bartender did not know. As the bartender pours their drinks, Jhaele approaches Nyx and Galrik. Nyx asks if there any sponsored fights and Jhaele tells Nyx she does not have any fights due to the occupation but to keep the peace she is letting a recruiter for the Taskmaster use her pits. She points to a human male in the corner of the room who appears to be watching them. Jhaele tells Nyx Weregund is a local shop owner and a recruiter for the Taskmaster. Weregund has some type of pull with Zhentarian. She is not real pleased with the arrangement but is doing it to save her establishment and her crew. Nyx thanks Jhaele for the information and tells Galrik to stay put because she wants to determine the Zhentarian’s strength in Shadowdale. Nyx pays for some food and drinks for Galrik and tells hims to stay put as she exits the inn.
Outside Nyx makes her way around Shadowdale notating the amount of patrols and where they are reporting to. Nyx discovers the Captain of the Zhentarian is staying in a house at the outskirts of town. After spending sometime observing the house Nyx makes her way to the edge of town where she notices wagons of weapons staged with supplies. The wagons had a strange symbol carved into them. Making a mental note of the wagons Nyx makes her way back to the Inn.
Inside the Inn, Galrik looks over at Weregund and tries to stare him down. Weregund meets Galrik’s stare and smiles as he looks at something in his hand before replacing it in his pocket. Galrik notices Weregund nod to someone. Galrik without taking his eyes off Weregund hears heavy foot steps behind him then a hand placed on his shoulder. Galrik turns around and sees a half-giant staring at him. The half-giant address the room as Galrik was the one who murdered his clan and he challenges Galrik to a blood duel. Weregund jumps up and address the Inn claiming he will be the half-giant’s sponsor and asks if Galrik accepts. Galrik downs his drink and accepts the duel. Galrik, Weregund and the half-giant make their way down to the fighting pits below the Inn. Weregund tells Galrik as the challenger what does he want if he was victorious. Galrik tells Weregund he wants the half-giant to serve him. Weregund accepts the terms and is about to ask Galrik about the half-giant’s terms as Nyx barges in after finding out what had happen a few minutes earlier from Jhaele. Nyx scolds Weregund for trying to trick Galrik. Weregund tells Nyx he is not trying to trick Galrik but knows of Garlik from the fight in Waterdeep. Weregund pushes Nyx for accepting his terms would be Galrik’s power. Nyx balks at Weregund saying he has no power. Weregund answers he knows Xanathar Guild has an interest as Galrik signed a contract. Weregund pulls out a gem stone which begins to glow. Weregund remarks he can pull Xanathar Guild into the matter when he is distracted by the glow of the stone by Nyx. Nyx lunges forward attacking Weregund as he falls to the ground. The half-giant turns and swings his club at Galrik missing him. Galrik response by slicing the half-giant several times staggering him. The half-giant swings wildly and hits Galrik. Galrik steps back from the blow and unleashes another attack killing the half-giant. Galrik turns to see if Nyx needs any help and sees Nyx rip out Weregund’s throat as he lets out a blood gurgle and falling limp.
Galrik turns his attention back to the half-giant. Summoning a power deep down Galrik is able to connect to the half-giant’s soul. Galrik asks if the half-giant wants to return to the land of the living to help him against the evils gods. The half-giant tells Galrik he would but he would be bound by his geas to turn his power over Lucien. The half-giant tells Galrik how Lucien saved his clan and now he serves Lucien. He is ordered to help find special people so Lucien can have their powers. Galrik asks Nyx about removing the geas and Nyx tells Galrik it will take some powerful magic but might find someone to help in Waterdeep. They take part of the half-giant’s body and store it so Galrik can raise the half-giant at a different time. Nyx and Galrik turn their attention to Weregund. Galrik connects with Weregund’s soul and interrogate it. They find out Weregund is part of the Iron Ring and he is a locator. His task was to find other protectors and destroyers and bring them to Waterdeep for the Taskmaster. Weregund uses a gem made out of stardust which can detect the powers of the protectors and destoyers. Weregund does not know what the Zhentarian are looking for but the Taskmaster is working with them which why he was able to move and act freely. After finishing with Weregund, Nyx and Galrik decide to pay Captain Ramular of the Zhentarian a visit to see what they are looking for. Nyx and Galrik make their way out of the Inn and to Captain’s house.
Upon arriving at the Captain Ramular’s house they encounter two Zhentarian guards. They demand to know why Nyx and Galrik were there. They tell the guard they are there to kill the captain. The guards react and try to attack Nyx and Galrik but miss wildly. Galrik swings at the first guard cutting him in two as his backswing hits the other guard. As the second guard fall to the ground Nyx finishes him off. Galrik drags the two halfs of the guard around the side of the house and throws it in a bush as Nyx throws the other guard’s body behind a barrel. Nyx opens the door and walks into the room where Captain Ramular his reading some letters at a desk. Without looking up, Captain Ramular growls he was not to be disturbed. Nyx tells Captain Ramular his guards were busy at the moment and she is here to let him know his life is going to come to an end. Captain Ramular stands up and draws his sword failing to notice Galrik entering from the back entrance. Galrik throws his iron mug at Captain Ramular connecting with his head. Captain Ramular staggers backwards over the chair from the blow. Nyx leaps on him slashing and biting him. Captain Ramular tries to fight back but Galrik delivers a killing blow. Nyx and Galrik toss Captain's Ramular's quarters and take some things of interest. Nyx and Galrik decide to go after the remaining forces in Shadowdale. They take several patrols by surprise. Explosions and blood fill the street as Nyx and Galrik slay over fifty percent of the Zhentarian forces before they retreat from Shadowdale. Nyx and Galrik return to the bar to have a drink. Nyx throws the Captain Ramular's head on the bar top and tells Jhaele the Zhentarian are gone. As Nyx finishes her drink she tells Galrik they should pay Lord Amcathra a visit as the session comes to the end.
