Session Forty: The Clone Among Us

General Summary

The session began with the group spending their remaining healing to heal each other before trying to rest to gain spells and abilities back. The group discovered magic will not affect Sneatcha and Cannella but natural innate abilities to heal would heal them. After securing the area, Sneatcha and Cannella set up watch as the rest of the group enter Nyx’s tent to rest. During the watch, Cannelle heard some screeching noises coming from the eastern corridor but nothing entered the main chamber. The alive Mystra followers in the cells were still in a trance and did not react to any interactions. After resting Cora tells the group she recognized the figure in dark plate mail who was watching them. It was Lady Emeritus Lynda who is a noble woman for Waterdeep and was at the group’s noble coronation when the Dark Masks tried to abduct Cora.
  Nyx packed up her tent and the group made their way down the corridor. The double doors to the room were open and a strange darkness covered the room. Cora and Nyx were able to see through the darkness to see two areas where a group of dark tentacles were swaying in the darkness. The group entered the room which was a storage room with a set of large crates in the center. Cora decided to see if the dark tentacles would react to creatures and summoned a group of monkeys in the area. The tentacles lashed out near the monkeys but did not directly attack them. Nyx searched the various crates in the room and discovered shadowoil which will penetrate the darkness the shadow planes creates. Nyx hands out the flasks to the group for future use. The group decided to travel through the tentacles to get across the room and investigate the door. After dodging the tentacles, the group was successful in crossing the room without getting hit. Nyx checked the door and finding no traps opened the door.
  The room inside the door was a large arcane laboratory. In the center of the chamber was a woman on her knees in a glass enclosure. Two large mechanic devices were on each side of the glass enclosure releasing a blue energy which fed into the glass enclosure. A human male stepped from behind the glass enclosure. He introduced himself as Istivin Naerindyth and told the group he was expecting them sooner as Despayr told him to be prepared for them. Istivin tells the group he needs a few minutes as four spider demons appears from the corners of the room and move to attack the party. Cannella moves up and attacks one of the machines as Nyx uses a fireball on the other. Istivin channels dark energy and hits Galrik as one the demons moves to attack Galrik. Two demons swarm Cannella as they attack him as the fourth one attempts to attack Nyx. Cora casts an entangling spell which catches three of the demons. Cannella strikes the machine again destroying it as Nyx finishes the other off with a fireball. Galrik swings his sword connecting with two of the demons destroying one. The demons attack back as they struggle against the vines entangling them. Cora hits Istivin with a snowball staggering him. Istivin flees the chamber through a door to the south. Galrik attacks one of the remaining demon scoring a solid hit which causing the demon to explode with black goo spraying everywhere. Nyx and Cannella fight the remaining demon. Cora sees Istivin fleeing pauses for a moment to check the room to see if there is any other invisible creatures and don’t find any. The group finishes the remaining demon off as Cannella goes to the door where Istivin fled out of. The door empties into hall with several empty cells ending in a door to the south.
  Galrik charges past Cannella to catch Istivin into the hold cell area. Not seeing Istivin, Galrik makes his way to the end of the room to where the door is opened. Cora dimension steps into the cell area and finds the open door at the end of the room. Cora looks through the door way and finds a dark gate inside the room. The runes surrounding the gate were glowing a bluish-green color. Cora shouts back down the hallway she found a gate. Galrik pauses at the door for a moment while Cora decides to return to where Nyx and Cannella. As Cora dimension steps Cora briefly sees Galrik charging into the room.
  Nyx makes her way to the woman in the glass enclosure and lifts the glass freeing her. Freed from the glass enclosure, the woman thanks Nyx and the rest of the group for helping her. The woman recalls her name as Keyla and she was looking for the group. Keyla tells the group she is part of Mystra and Shar was trying to destroy her to create a void of dead magic in the weave causing a rift in the weave where the shadow weave can enter. By destroying the machines stopped the rift from forming and saving Keyla. With Keyla freed Divination, Enchantment and Evocation schools of magic are restored.
  Cannella, while guarding the door, notices several ice sculptures of different party members on the walls and points them out to Cora and Nyx. Nyx examines the sculptures and determined they are used in part of the simulacrum spell. The group discovers the ice sculpture of Nyx and Cora were shattered while the ice sculptures of Cannella and Sneatcha are gone. Cannella destroys the other ice sculptures of Thundur, Galrik and Valna. Keyla tells the group two of the ice sculptures were completed (Cannella and Sneatcha) and they left with the woman in dark plate armor (Lady Emeritus Lynda). Despayr completed some type of ritual which connected him to the machine, the shadow plane and the ice sculptures but Keyla did not know what the ritual did.
  Not seeing Galrik returning, Cora thinks Galrik went through the gate. As the group prepares to go through the gate to find Galrik, Nyx returns back to the holding location where Sevius was to bring him so he is not left behind. Nyx then returns back with Sevius. When Nyx returns, she feels the Seer’s Eye beings to vibrate. Nyx consults Golorr which tells Nyx the Seer’s Eye has several different functions one being detecting gods. Keyla tells the group she has enough strength to transport the remaining followers of Mystra to safety and Sevius. Once she has them to safety she will connect with her other half (Lady Silverhand’s daughter) to reforge the schools of magic. Before she leaves she restores the connection to magic for Cannella and Sneatcha allowing them to leave the shadow plane.
  On the other side of the gate, Galrik finds himself in the outskirts of a forest. Below him Galrik sees Istivin mounting a very large creature with black, leathery wings, a toad-like body, and horse-like head. The skin of the creature is black and covered in "horn-shaped, wriggling skin growths. Three jaws filled with razor-sharp teeth and centered around a single snout snaps out as Istivin pulls back the reins as the creature lifts them into the air. Istivin smiles a sickly grin at Galrik as pulls a black lance and prepares to charge Galrik with his mount as Galrik sees the Zheatarim’s crest on Istivin’s saddle. In the distance Galrik sees other riders in the sky attacking a tower in the clearing below. Dark solider bearing the crest of the Zhentarim attack a make shift militia near the tower as series of explosions can be heard as the session comes to an end.

Notes

Key Findings:
  • Cora recognized the figure in the plate mail as Emeritus Lynda.
  • The Church of Shar was trying to use the shadow weave's energy to destroy Keyla, the second vessel of Mystra, by using the psychic energies of Mystra's followers to fuel the shadow weave.
  • The by-product of the psychic energies was causing a tear in the weave.
  • The runes on Despayr's neck channeled the psychic energies which were linked to the cells. When he was struck, the psychic energy transferred to the followers in the cell and fueled the machines which was draining Keyla.
  • Despayr also channeled the magical backlash from the Protectors to create simulacrum of the Protectors.
  • Cora's and Nyx's ice figure which is needed to create a simulacrum was destroyed due to them saving against the backlash.
  • Sneatcha's and Cannella's simulacrum were missing.
  • The party destroyed the other ice figures to prevent other simulacrum from being created.
  • Galrik followed Istivin through a portal gate.
