Session Thirty-Seven: Into The Shadows

General Summary

The session begins with the party searching Shir’s office for a possible alternative exit. After checking the area, it was determined the only exit is from the door the party used to enter the office. Nyx checked the door and determined it was safe to open. Nyx opened the door which opened into a different location. Gone was the temple and it was replaced with a darkly lit cellar. The party noticed their low light and darkvision was not as effective. As the party’s vision adjusted they noticed several prison cells flanking the wall. Nyx consulted with Glorr and determined the party was transported to the shadow plane.
  The party exited Shir’s office and began to explore the cellar. Nyx and Sneatcha notice a figure in the last prison cell next to an open doorway with stairs leading up. Sneatcha and Nyx made their way over to the cell when Sneatcha recognizes the figure. Inside the cell is Sevius, Lord Bloodhelm’s assistant. Sevius notices Sneatcha and calls out to Sneatcha. Nyx manages to open the cell door and help Sneatcha render aid to Sevius.
  Sevius tells Sneatcha a mysterious woman showed up at the House of Heroes asking for sanctuary claiming unknown forces were looking for her. Sevius took the mysterious woman to see Lord Bloodhelm. The mysterious woman held a private audience with Lord Bloodhelm. Sevius did not know what was discussed between Lord Bloodhelm and the mysterious woman. Sevius states he was summoned to Lord Bloodhelm’s office when the demons attacked the temple. When Sevius entered Lord Bloodhelm’s office he was told by Lord Bloodhelm to take the mysterious woman out the back exit and bring the mysterious woman to the Trollskull Manor. Sevius was to give a message to the party the mysterious woman needed their protection from the darkness. As Sevius and the mysterious woman were leaving the temple they were over ran by a group of demons and captured. They were brought to the cellar and held. Several worshippers of the darkness tried to remove the mysterious woman from the cell but every time they were destroyed by some type of mystic force. A cloaked figure arrived with what looked like of follower of Mystra. The cloaked figure gave the follower of Mystra manacles with strange runes on them. The follower of Mystra entered the cell and was able to use the manacles on the mysterious woman which allowed the worshippers of the darkness to take her out of the cell. They left with a group prisoner while Sevius was tortured by a creature which looked like a six limbed tiger trying to find out what Lord Bloodhelm said to the mysterious woman. During his time in the cell Sevius overheard the cloak figure stating to a woman called Lady Arthas they needed more followers of Mystra because of the loss of the alchemist. They needed to break the mysterious woman in order to tear the weave and needed the followers to help break the bonds.
  As Sneatcha and Nyx were listening to Sevius they heard some noise coming from the doorway. They told Sevius they will be back and closed the cell door. Nyx went invisible as Sneatcha hid. The rest of the party failed to detect the noise and were surprised by a cloaked figured followed by a creature which resembled an upright tiger with six arms. The cloaked figured introduced himself as Ashala, the speaker of Despayr. Ashala said they anticipated the arrival of the Protectors and Despayr wanted to speak to them. Ashala stated he would guarantee the party’s safety to meet with Despayr if they go with him. After a brief discussion, the party agreed and Ashala waited of the party to follow him. Sneatcha tried to sneak behind but tripped and bumped into one of the cells alerting Ashala to his presence. Ashala called out to Sneatcha to join them which Sneatcha did. The party followed Ashala up the stairs as Nyx locked the cell and provide some supplies for Sevius to keep him safe until the party returns.
  Ashala led the party out of the cellar which emptied into ruins of an old temple. The ruins sat on a small island in a middle of a swamp. Ashala and the party walked to a dock where a keelboat was docked. Ashala handed the captain of the boat several silver coin. The party noticed the hand of the captain was bones and they only could see two red eyes no facial features behind the hood of the captain. The party boarded the boat and saw four orc skeletons chained to benches each manning an oar. The tiger creature pushed Sneatcha remarking how goblins stink with the stringy meat. Sneatcha remarked he was going to wipe his ass with his fur. The creature let out a laughter stating he would enjoy removing Sneatcha’s limbs. The captain shouted out to the skeleton orcs to row and the boat left the island following lit torches across the swamp. Nyx, invisible, followed behind leaving arcane marks so the party can retract their steps.
  As the boat was moving across the swamp, Sneatcha looked out into the water. Sneatcha spotted a large mass about 30 yards from the boat following their movements. As the boat pulled up to a torch, the captain yelled to the orc skeletons to stop rowing. Ashala spoke briefly to the captain and tells the party it appears to be a rogue mystra user. The guardian is upset and they will need a sacrifice. Sneatcha grabs one of the orc skeletons and throws it overboard as a sacrifice. Ashala tells Sneatcha it will not work as the large mass in the water charges towards the boat hitting it. Sneatcha tries to trip the creature into the swamp but was unsuccessful. The large mass raises its head out of the water revealing an undead dragon turtle. The undead dragon turtle sprays the deck with hot steam hitting the party. Sneatcha attacks the creature but is having a hard time hitting it due to its ability to displace. Thundur moves in to help Sneatcha as Galrik tries to fight off the undead dragon turtle. The undead dragon turtle focuses on Galrik biting him several times. Nyx seeing Sneatcha having trouble with the creature casts true sight on him. With true sight, Sneatcha is able to hit the creature several times. Nyx flies over to Ashala and grabs him. As Galrik is fighting the undead dragon turtle, Nyx drops Ashala into its mouth which crushes him to death. With help from Thundur, Sneatcha kills the creature as Nyx and Galrik finish off the undead dragon turtle. The captain points to Sneatcha and tells him to row but Sneatcha throws a few silver coins at him. The captain’s eyes glow and Sneatcha is compelled to row. The chain magically attaches to Sneatcha’s leg as he begins to row. Sneatcha is able to resist the death effects of the rowing and a short time later the boat pulls up to a dock at the end of the swamp.
  The party disembarks the boat and makes their way over to a small cabin beyond the dock. The cabin is built on the edge of a canyon with a suspension bridge crossing the rift. The water from the swamp flows over the edge into a roaring waterfall. Sneatcha looked down to see if he could see anything beyond waterfall and only sees darkness. As the party approaches the cabin, they noticed two dog like creatures covered in armor plates patrolling. The party attempts to sneak past the dog creatures into the cabin. One of the dog creatures hears Galrik moving around and charges to attack. Nyx approaches the creature from behind and strikes it down. Galrik moves out of the cabin and attacks the other dog creature with Thundur. They slay the creature and move back to the cabin to rejoin the party. Inside the cabin has basic supplies and after search it the party finds nothing of value.
  The party makes their way across the suspension bridge towards a tower. As the party was moving across the bridge, they saw a shadow type dragon flying towards a distant tower. The dragon had strange purple runes on its body. As the party is half way across the bridge a corpse comes flying through the air and narrowly misses Sneatcha. Nyx looks towards the tower as a bone golem with black ichor comes charging down the bridge towards the party with four wolf skeletons. Thundur rages and moves up to attack the bone golem as the skeleton wolves attack Galrik and Sneatcha. Nyx targets the bone golem as the bone golem grapples Thundur and sprays black ichor on his causing him to weaken. Nyx attacks the bone golem as Thundur breaks the grapple and attacks. Galrik attacks the skeleton wolves as Sneatcha destroys the ones attacking him. Another corpse is launched at the party narrowly missing Galrik. Sneatcha uses his magic horn to summon five barbarians which he orders to attack the bone golem. The party land several blows on the bone golem and manage to destroy it. Sneatcha discovers an undead ettin at the tower is the creature throwing corpses at the party. The party moves to the tower and attacks the ettin. The ettin throws one last corpse which catches one of the barbarians knock him over the bridge into the depths below. The session ends with the party about to enter the tower and Cannella feeling a strange connection to the shadow like dragon.

Notes

Key Findings:
  • Followers of Shar are using a camp in the Shadow plane as a base of operation to tear the weave.
  • Followers of Mystra who were charmed at the false temple were transported to the Shadow plane for some part in tearing the weave.
  • Despayr is the one heading the operation to tear the weave.
