It began when a ship exploded in the docks of Eros Station. The station was put in full lockdown, and the population moved to fallout shelters. Only they weren't fallout shelters, but contamination cells, flooded with radiation and what is now known as the Protomolecule.   Everyone on the station was contaminated within hours. As soon as the information spread to the UN and MCR governments, the station was put on full quarantine, nobody knowing what was happening within.   After weeks of the Protomolecule rebuilding the organic material that had once been the population of Eros along with anything else it could find, the station began to move on its own. The UN launced its entire nuclear arsenal at the station, while the OPA retasked the generation ship Nauvoo to act as a battering ram in hopes of either destroying it outright, or pushing it into a solar decay orbit.   Both plans failed, but in the end Eros changed course and plunged into the atmosphere of Venus, where it continues to radically change its own structure and that of Venus.
