The Heartlands

A lush and fertile farmland bordering the sea and surrounded by mountains, this is The Heartlands of The Kingdom. It is the major province of The Kingdom and houses its central government, major food production and largest settlements. The majority of the area consists of vast tracts of farmland, mostly owned by local subsistence farmers. Notable locations include the fishing town of Aterfron (once known as the V&A Waterfront), the military hub of The Kingdom known as The Citadel (Formerly The Castle of Good Hope), the house of government known as Stellen (Once Stellenbosch University), and The Palace of the King (Once the University of Cape Town). A mountain plateau lies in the centre of the heartland. The kingdom is currently constructing a castle atop it, to house the King and organise government in a more defensible position.

Geography

A lush and fertile farmland bordering the sea and surrounded by mountains, this is The Heartland of The Kingdom. It is the most major occupied province of The Kingdom. A beautiful golden coast, it represents the idyllic world under The Kingdom's holy rule. To the South and West lies glistening ocean, to the North and East, mountains leading to the harsher and drier lands of the outer territories. In the centre of the heartland lies a plateau of a mountain, visible from all around. Accesible only via a cable-cart - repaired from the previous era - or a day's climb, this is the location of a major construction project by the Kingdom to create a castle atop it, known as Castle Augustus. As such, the Mountain has been renamed Mount Augustus. The area between Mount Augustus and the Fishing City of Aterfron houses not only The Citadel but also a higher concentration of ruins. These ruins have rotted away and been overgrown, so where once a city with tall buildings may have stood now only strangely porous and unstable Earth remains, with pockmarks on the landscape leading to overgrown caves and caverns filled with rusty metal and glass, providing shelter for many creatures not often seen on the surface.

Fauna & Flora

As the heartlands are largely civilized farmland, most flora is cultivated barley and grapevines, with some forests bordering the bottoms of the mountains. Livestock such as sheep and cows are kept by the farming populace. Mangy dogs are a common sight in most homes. Horses are used by any wealthy enough to travel farther than the local area. Seagulls encircle the coastlines, willing to eat any unused waste. The cavernous ruins that sit between the ocean and Mount Augustus are home to stranger wildlife and more overgrowth, though most regard such ruins as cursed and its inhabitants are rarely seen. Bats and birds nest within, and feral cats and other small predators depend on these ruins for both food and shelter. Rumors persist of more dangerous denizens, but have neither been confirmed nor denied, and The Kingdom warns against anyone but official Kingdom Priests from entering the unholy places.

Natural Resources

The temperate climate and fertile soil make for an area rich in farmland. This is the agricultural hub of The Kingdom, and consists of rolling pastures of barley, wine vineyards and other fruit production. The sea is also a source of food, and is fished by great wooden boats sailing out of the town of Aterfron. Fresh water is mostly accessed via well, although the Kingdom claims to be working towards repairing a dam directly to the East.
