The Occulan Empire

The Occulan Empire governs the majority of the Altimatian Archipelago from its ruling seat in its Capital, High Occulan, which gives the Empire its name.

History

The Empire was established through a series of different events which were seemingly unrelated. First, the Orcish horde's invasion of the mainland led to the destruction of Craggan, the only city to rival Occulan, as well as the Union of the crowns of the Northern Kingdom and Ardyn. This brought the Southern Clanlands of the Cragganmen and the Fae Isles of Ardyn under the rule of a single royal House.
The second event was the Dwarvik Sessesion, which disconnected Dwarborg, and its considerable technological might, from influencing the politics of Altimatia. It also guaranteed Dwarvik as close allies as they required external support to prevent them being retaken by Dvarborg.
With the most powerful nations under the sway of the crown, the final step was in winning the minds of the people. This was achieved through religion. The Imkian faith had always been to core religion of the Nothern Kingdom but the rise of Seerism in Halfdom had spread as a stricter but clearer set of guidelines for the common folk of the land. The common fears of magic use, monsters and foreign invaders helped spur on the rise of the faith and it soon showed itself to be the dominant set of beliefs throughout the Northern half of Altimatia. Soon the Seers were within the military and government of the kingdoms and a coup to bring about their own theocratic rule was inevitable.
The glorious revolution was fast yet bloody. The streets of High Occulan became a war zone between the revolutionaries and the loyalist soldiers. However, the revolutionaries had acquired black powder weaponry from the dwarvik and military support from the Hobgoblin Khan. The distance of the loyalist military forces in Ardyn left the small Queen's Guard as the most organised group of soldiers in the city. With the death of the royal family, the crown passed to their relative, Mary Wollenstonecroft.
 The Empress immediately turned her attention to the remaining kingdoms of the Mainland. Through religion, bribery, promises and threats the kingdoms of Halfdom, Firland, Gnomwal and the Goliatage all swore fealty to her. The remaining conflict, known as the Winter War, was nothing but a series of skirmishes throughout the Fae Isles by Loyalist soldiers against Imperial marines.
