Forlog Veida

Destiny Hunting

Written by Endrise

Amongst the many tribes and settlements of Nõrdlann and its Nõrdmen, celebrating one's birthday is rather simple: a somewhat bigger feast and a present, and often a day off for the person so they can just enjoy a break from living in the cold.

However, on their 12th birthday, that is when each teenage Nõrdman or Nõrdwoman begins their first hunting trip with their parent figure. Known as Forlog Veida, both parent and child go along into the local wilderness to hunt their first animal.

Although it is regularly but a method to teach others to start hunting, many actually consider it a way to predict the potential future that might lie ahead for the person. Depending on the first animal one has hunted down, their destiny varies.

List of Potential Futures

Animal Future
Rabbit & Bunny You shall have a long and extended family bloodline come from you. Whether that be through having many children, or marrying somebody with their own extensive bloodline.
Most Birds You will travel far, presumably beyond the regions of the lands itself, seeking out new experiences beyond the horizon.
Crow Death might come for you, but it will not take you. Life will be tough, but you will somehow succeed by the end.
Eagle Not only will you travel far, but your name will become known across the lands you visit. Either in glory, or in infamy.
Wolf You will become a cunning leader, leading a group to great years. Maybe you even become a master of a particular skill, sought after by the local population.
Bear You become a fierce warrior, a protector of your home. Battle and fighting will be in your blood, with your image towering over foes.
Deer & Moose You become wealthy, either rising up in society with riches and fame, or having your name be boosted by a honourable title.

This is a great ritual. I love that their projected future depends on what animal they kill. The rabbit one is my favourite.
