The Glassing of Waxhearth

The clouds parted, for many fighting that day the first time they saw the sun on the surface. The shadow of that heavenly horror who opened the skies, and offered itself to the great will without question.   There was no victory in this for them.
All they wanted was to wipe this place from the map.
— Report from the Glassing of Waxhearth
The Glassing of Waxhearth was a battle in the Plane of Air, an attack by the Heavenly Host that resulted in the destruction of Waxhearth and the creation of the Glass Sea.   An example of the eagerness for Angels to serve the great will, even at the cost of their own demise.

A Blazing Star

The conflict broke out like many others when an angelic incursion invaded the plane of fire, trying to claim Waxhearth for themselves in their further conquest of the cosmic hourglass. Attempts to fight back proved succesful enough to push them back, causing many to retreat during the fight.   However, things changed when one of the angelic beings emerged, dubbed by many as the Suneater. This particular thing used its halo to pierce the ash clouds, granting direct sight of the plane's blazing sun. And with its lens-like interior, amplified an incoming solar flare.   What followed was an attack that scorched the entire region down to glass, obliterating both Waxhearth and the region surrounding it in a single attack. The attack too out the angel alongside it, making any witnesses believe it to be a suicide attack to shut down the place regardless.

Aftermath

The aftermath of the battle left the region a molten sea of glass and rubble, no longer inhabitable by any native life. The Angel's halo also ensures no clouds can even reform around it, leaving it vulnerable to direct solar radiation and occasional solar flares.
