Fighter
Fighters fill many roles in society. As long as those roles involve using weapons to kill others, that is. Mercenary, soldier, guard (city or caravan), and adventurer are all typical jobs a Fighter might pursue. Less acceptable careers include; brigand, outlaw, and murder hobo.
Career
Qualifications
The ability to hit their target with their weapon, and not get killed in return. Everything after that is gravy.
Career Progression
Those who rise up the ranks under another's employ can find themselves with a Captaincy and possibly a pension to boot.
The self-employed can claim whatever title they can hold on to. Often this is a corpse on the side of the road. But it is not unheard of for an experienced Fighter to form a mercenary company, or found a village, or earn a noble title and lands, or buy an inn to retire in.
Payment & Reimbursement
Payment for Fighters who venture into life as a guard, soldier, scout or mercenary are payed well for their services, considering the risk to life and limb. They often receive room and board from these employments as well.
Those who follow the paths of adventuring or banditry receive payment in proportion to the coin they can take for themselves.
Perception
Purpose
A Fighters purpose is to protect those who pay them, or who they are obligated to. A guard protecting a town or merchant. A soldier protecting their nation, or their comrades. A mercenary protecting their captain. An adventurer protecting their band. All of these seek to save lives by taking other lives.
Social Status
Fighters are typically considered commoners despite whatever fortunes once favored them at birth. (Nobles who go to war are their own creature and not considered to be Fighters)
Nobles tend to look down on, or ignore, those they pay to serve them.
Commoners look up to, or fear, those who are trained to kill.

Dangers & Hazards
Death would seem to be the largest hazard a Fighter would face. But, truth be told, dismemberment is a greater fear amongst those who follow the martial ways.
It is always good to have a sword-arm around when there's danger about. But unless you have an unreasonably keen interest in swords, do not expect scintillating conversations from them.
