Millennium Scales

The Millennium Scales are one of seven major Millennium Artifacts.

PROPERTIES

The Millennium Scales - in recorded literature - were rumored to not be a particularly powerful Artifact, and in fact had little reference at all in historical literature.

The Scales were the Artifact whose location was broadcast to Zavala Stormrender, and which the party successfully retrieved before fleeing south from the Research Outpost down the mountain. They were hidden in a cave whose location was deciphered from a riddle,¹ and it required teamwork and use of the scales themselves to extract the Artifact from its hiding place.

The Millennium Scales, when held up to a person, mystically tips their balance, apparently indicating something about the person to which it is extended. The party's working theory is that it points to 'alignments' or 'moral tendencies,' though it has been tested on too small a population to be certain.

The scales also hold the ability to merge qualities of primal elements - for example, when pure water is balanced against pure earth, nearby pure water sources run muddy and nearby earth turns to muck. Balancing amalgams of elements against one another produce interesting results - Very few experiments into this matter have been conducted so it cannot be said for certain the limits of the Scales' capabilities.

EXPERIMENTS (UNABRIDGED)

Earth + Flaming Oil

• The more the scales are tipped in one direction, the more drastic the effect: but the earth becomes hot and glows red-hot

Earth + River Water

• The earth in the cave begins to get soft and slump inwards, the river behind us starts to get muddy and slushy

Vodka + Flaming Oil

• The vodka in Fritz’s bag gets super hot, and the water in the river turned into super violent steam (the river was turbulent and spewed boiling water/steam everywhere)
  • (*inspired by something Danner said: “vodka is the perfect combination of water and fire”*)

  • Zavala mentions the Unsosen and how the scales seem to correspond to a Fellowship of Equilibrium (but since we retconned the conversation with the dragon we don’t really know what she’s talking about)

Metal + Flaming Oil

• The flame is snuffed out instantly, the metal is hot to the touch and inexplicably heavier
