Personal history

My Circle was founded by an ancient druid named Swampy Bogbeard on the ruins of a once-great city, now reclaimed by nature. Bogbeard ascended into legend, and then godhood. He is now worshipped and revered by his ancestors. Located in Kryptgarden Forest, my Circle is reclusive, and rarely has contact with the outside world, save for the rare trip to the nearby human settlement Westbridge for supplies. I was born here, and have spent my whole life living here.   My main work in the tribe involves going on expeditions to the ancient dwarven ruins of the city to look for various arcana which could perhaps elucidate the origins and nature of our founder - Bogbeard. I have been going on trips to the ruins for years, and intesely studying the scripts. This has given me a deep understanding of arcana and religion, far beyond the reaches of our forest.   One day, I was on an expedition, when I tripped and fell into a wall, the wall broke through into a large chamber - I assumed this had never been previously explored. It appeared to be a tower of some sort, perhaps a fellow lorekeeper dwelt here in ages past? Lining the walls were volumes upon volumes of clumsily arranged yet perfectly preserved texts, a wealth of knowledge. I quickly gathered up all the tomes I could carry and hurried back.   In the days following, I didn’t leave my tree. I was so engrossed in this new knowledge I couldn’t stop reading. However, I came across something that deeply disturbed me… the texts were incomplete. The scholar who lived here must have never finished his work. The texts spoke of a great evil, borne of an other-wordly dimension, who laid waste to the city, and everything in his path. A demon who wished to destroy the natural world.   This awakened something in me, something that I nor anyone in my tribe had ever experienced, the call to adventure. The books made me realise how much I am missing sequestered in this forest, in my tree. How much danger nature was truly in, and I had to try to save it.   I set off to Phandalin, which would be a good base from which I can go and explore the various dwarven ruins nearby for any infomation at all on the ancient scholar, or any of his works I have yet to find.

Journal entry 1 - first night in Phandalin

These guys are really weird

Journal entry 2 - from the dark and mouldy Axeholm barracks

In what little sleep I got here - amongst the snoring of the dwarf and the distant snarls of ghouls still roaming these halls - I went into what I can only describe as a trance.   I saw him - Bogbeard. He came to me in my dreams. He looked just like the carvings in the trees at home. He was incorporeal, yet it seemed that I could reach out and stroke his scraggly white beard. He spoke, but I could not understand; whether it was some ancient language that I have not yet come across in my studies or my mind playing tricks I do not know. He had an air of haste about him, almost as if he was urging me to do something… I focussed and went deeper into the dream.   Darkness - for what felt like hours. Then… light. The brightest light I had ever seen: starlight. Hundreds upon hundreds of stars appeared before me, intricantly connected and resonating with power. Of course! Many tomes from the wizard’s ruined tower spoke of the divining powers of the stars, how generations of mages had sought to harness their power to alter fate… This must be what Bogbeard was compelling me to do - find my path through the stars.   As soon as I awoke I hurriedly scrawled the star map that was revealed to me… I swear the ink is glowing, it’s hard to tell within the light of the hearth. This map seems to hum with energy, and something within me hums alongside it.   With this map I believe that my ancestor Bogbeard can directly guide my hand to my destiny, whatever that may be. asd
