The Cold Region, Pomysthos

Description

The Cold Region, known as Pomysthos, encircles the enigmatic Right Void Lake and is governed by a Technocracy. Renowned as the home of the Warmaker and adept weaponsmiths, Pomysthos stands as a war-centric realm within Libertas. The region is teeming with monsters, prompting its inhabitants to engage in hunts with unparalleled fervor, a reflection of their intense pursuits. Within hidden workshops, the rhythmic clang of forging echoes, as craftsmen relentlessly push the boundaries of weapon mastery, contributing to the region's dynamic and perilous allure.

Government

Pomysthos operates under a nobless technocracy, where leaders are chosen from guild heads and artisans based on their technical expertise and accomplishments. This system diverges from traditional democracies by emphasizing skill and performance over popular vote. However, the selection process can lead to altruistic or mania-driven leadership, creating potential imbalances within governance.

Defenses

The region is uniquely defended by created beings, as many artisans and craftsmen lack training in conventional weaponry and tactics. Instead, they rely on mechanical constructs animated through magical and Gearmachanicus means, powered by elemental energy. The array of defenses includes hand-carved animal-shaped minotaurs known as Stautwards, and mechanical birds crafted from steel for surveillance. Only those who are crippled or maimed are permitted to serve in enhanced roles, often with significant portions of their bodies replaced by Gearmachanicus technology. Historically, dwarves had employed Gemcore as the region's security force, but following a catastrophic incident with gempowder, they were forced to abandon Pomysthos.

Commerce

Pomysthos thrives on the trade of magical appliances, crafted creations, and constructs, which are exchanged for gems and other magical materials required for their production and maintenance. The economy primarily hinges on the craftsmanship of Hairfoots and Elves, who produce intricate items and animated trinkets. Trade relations are strictly regulated, allowing exchanges only with trusted partners who respect their inventions and do not seek to reverse-engineer them.

History

Pomysthos was once a desolate wasteland, devoid of resources and civilization. It began as a frozen expanse with caverns steeped in ancient magic, where innovation was strictly forbidden. Those who dared to invent faced punishment and exile. However, this bleak fate changed dramatically when the banished dwarves rose from obscurity, forging an empire amidst the inhospitable landscape.   The discovery of Gempowder by the Hairfoots ignited a fierce conflict between the dwarves and other races. This volatile war saw the Gemcore enslaved and exploited, driving the dwarves to the brink of annihilation. Faced with the dire consequences of continued bloodshed, a tenuous peace was brokered. The dwarves and their beloved Gemcore were forced to abandon Pomysthos, leaving the region in the hands of the Hairfoots and elves. The remaining inhabitants adopted the dwarves' tools and knowledge to become inventors themselves.

Religion

The predominant faith in Pomysthos is strict adherence to the worship of Loarkam the Fair and her angels. Deviations from this path incur severe penalties, enforced by village elders and the capital's reformant squads. Despite this, some villages practice the secret worship of other deities, including Flax. Rumors circulate of a cult devoted to a mechanical god,a dragon forged of metal and magic, said to have been created by or left behind by Ryujin himself.

Law and Order

The legal framework in Pomysthos does not impose restrictions on creation or rights violations against the crippled or injured. However, theft and murder are severely punished. The region strives for peace. Pomysthos permits the use of animated or Gearmechanicus enhancements, such as mechanical arms, legs, or organs, but this comes with stringent regulations. Those with such augmentations are often stigmatized, facing societal pressure and legal scrutiny, as they may be perceived as "robots" or less than fully humanoids. However, rogue inventions pose a significant threat, leading to strict laws against harboring errant Gearmechanicus constructs. Engaging with these creations on a personal level, be it through friendship or emotional attachment, is seen as a violation of societal norms, resulting in severe repercussions for those who dare to blur the lines between creator and creation.
