Viscoid Cube
Found in underground locations, viscoid cubes are enormous, slow-moving masses of highly acidic protoplasm that consume any sort of organic matter. They are particularly dangerous to subterranean explorers as they are nearly transparent and completely silent; many an adventurer has met his or her end through being caught unaware by these mindless predators.
Philosophers of Tel believe these creatures to be a remnant of the the first lifeforms that arose after the Second Creation, during the Limous Era.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Despite their name, viscoid cubes are actually giant amorphic organisms of protoplasm encased within a pellucid membrane that expand to the dimensions of whatever space they find themselves in. The idea that their natural form is cube stems from a misconception as they are most encountered by adventurers roaming the rectangular corridors of underground crypts and the like. However, viscoid cubes can, in fact, manipulate their form to squeeze through cavities as minute as one square foot in area. This ability is also used to produce a pseudopod to strike out at prey encountered by the cube.
Ecology and Habitats
Viscoid cubes have never been discovered on Tel's surface, so it is assumed that they can only survive in underground environments. The ultimate scavenger, it scours the floors of the caverns and crypts it inhabits as it sweeps up all carrion and rotting vegetable matter it encounters to be digested. Viscoid cubes seem to have no natural predators.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Viscoid cubes are omnivores capable of digesting any sort of animal, plant or fungi for nutrition. Upon encountering prey, a viscoid cube will lash out at it with a pseudopod that is coated with a paralyzing toxin. Those unfortunate enough to fall victim to its effects, find themselves slowly enveloped into the cube where they are slowly digested by its acidic protoplasm. Any non-digestible matter (e.g., bones, metal, etc.) are eventually excreted.
Additional Information
Average Intelligence
Having undergone a slow decline into denegeracy over eons, these children of the once mighty Slime Lords that once covered the surface of Tel are now mere mindless masses of ooze, driven only by instinct and hunger.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
While seemingly blind and deaf, these organisms do appear to be sensitive to vibration and heat.
