Men of the Waves
The men of the waves are an order of clerics who worship The Water Titan and preach The Tale of Father Ocean. They are a multinational organization, with different sects on every island with a majority Valeer population. They provide spiritual council and perform funerary rights, guiding their flocks in both life and death. Outside of their religious work, they also use their divine magic to stimulate the growth of coral, out of which the Hjaric make a majority of underwater buildings. This makes them indispensable to the various Valeer rulers, ensuring them broad protections and giving them a form of soft power to exert on the larger culture.
Cosmological Views
While each individual sect has its own slight variation of their beliefs and teachings, they all base their understanding of the world on the same foundation myth. The Tale of Father Ocean is that origin myth. In the story, Father Ocean, which is their name for The Water Titan, is the progenitor of all life. In the myth, he gives The Earth Titan, or "The First Mother", the "water of life", which she then takes into her body before birthing the world. The Air Titan and The Fire Titan, known as Lord Kuki and All Hungry Hau, exist in the narrative only to tempt and deceive the children of Father Ocean, binding them to air, heat, dreams, and food.
The Men of the Waves explain the current state of the world by blaming Lord Hau (The Fire Titan) of a dastardly plot that backfired. They say that before the old world ended, he created a fire so ravenously hungry that it consumed everything, even other fires. It was only when the oceans boiled, the land cracked with heat, and the air became polluted with a terrible smoke, and there was nothing left to burn, that Lord Hau realized his mistake.
Then, the Father in his infinite wisdom, used his power to lift some of his domain, the great seas, into the Skies, sparing some chosen souls who would go on to become the first Valeer. The other titans, great as they were, but uncreative, followed suit, copying the work of the Father.
This labor, including the constant effort of keeping the water islands in the Sky, drains the power of the Father, which is why he can't properly manifest and make himself known to his followers. In the same way, the other titans, who are much weaker than the Father, are too exhausted to make themselves known and cause trouble. But even in the new world, the servants of the trickster lords seek to pull the righteous away from the path of the Father.
Tenets of Faith
The Men of the Waves abide by 4 divine laws, given to them by their first leader, the Zetsu. These laws colour not only the religious beliefs of the Men, but also their day-to-day lives and interactions with others not of their faith. These laws are as follows:
- Honor thy Father.
- Protect thy Father's gifts.
- It is the duty of the strong to guide and protect the weak.
- Spread thy Father's love to all, even those who wish not to know it.
Granted Divine Powers
Clerics who originate from this faith generally embody the Tempest, Order, and Nature domains.
Our Father, He Who Gave Us Life, He Whose Water Runs Through All That Lives, Forgive Us For Our Sins, And Grant Us The Strength To Wash The World Clean.
