Red River Dam
In the 1930's, the U.S. federal government developed a project to dam the Red River in the area known as the Red River Canyon, a plan to generate hydro-electric power for Emerald City and the region as well as put much-needed money into the local economy. The Red River Dam Project was complete in 1939, nearly a year ahead of schedule, and the dam formed present day Lake Vallee, covering the abandoned mining town of Maxey. The dam continues to provide a significant portion of Emerald City’s electricity and is a local tourist attraction, as well as an occasional target for those looking to threaten the city’s power supply or the area downriver from the dam.
