The Gemini Case

In the 1980s, one of the most famous AEGIS cases occurred when the telepathic serial killer Gemini terrorized people from Washington to Freedom City. Forty-six people were murdered in the killing spree. Gemini’s victims were telepathically commanded to wear airtight masks that suffocated them (the slow suffocation produced a fear reaction on which Gemini fed when his victims’ bodies were found, they were wearing faceless masks that bore the astrological sign of the twin. His earliest victims were twins; he forced one to watch helplessly as the other died.   The only time that the police caught up to Gemini, he proved impervious to their weapons. The authorities feared he was unstoppable.   Gemini’s path of carnage attracted law enforcement experts from around the world, including AEGIS, who sent young agent Horatio "Harry" Powers to solve the case. Powers managed to identify Gemini as carnival mind reader Stefano Vezini. When Vezini’s powers emerged, he accidentally killed his twin brother Lorenzo, driving him insane. Vezini believed his brother’s ghost possessed him when he performed the killings. Vezini’s mother was a bitter, manipulative gypsy mystic with her own sanity issues. Powers tracked down the mother first; she poisoned him and tried to stab him, but the hardy Powers shot her. Seeing his dead mother, Gemini went berserk and threatened to kill three hostages, but Powers goaded him into using his telepathic powers on him.   This was Harry Powers’ plan all along. Thanks to experimental anti-psionic technology, Vezini burned out his powers trying to get Harry to put on the mask, lowering his force field defenses to a level where AEGIS could kill him. Four hostages were saved, and Harry’s guts and determination were universally proclaimed. Harry went on to become the director of AEGIS, and while he modestly says that the incident was blown out of proportion, privately he admits the sensation of Gemini crawling around in his head still gives him nightmares.
