Demons

Demons are a mythological (debated) race of creatures borne of weakness.   Most stories of demons reside firmly in folklore, whereby humans (or elves in older stories) surrender to a weakness which is then made physically manifest. There is no religious connotation to them.

Finn and the Franken

A common folktale spread all over the Eastern Kingdoms is of Finn and the Franken. The base structure of the myth is as follows:
Finn was the son of a rich king. He was strong, fast and magically gifted. His mother doted on him and fanned his vanity, but his father preferred his younger sister. Finn delighted in teasing and tormenting his sister with his impressive skills, and one day she threw herself into the ocean and died. Finn's mother followed suit, and Finn could not accept any blame from his father. When he woke the next day, Finn was arrested on charges of regicide. He was visited in jail by his twin - more beautiful, faster, better at magic, which Finn calls his Franken. The twin kills all the guards and prisoners. Finn is due to be executed the next day. When the executioner asks if Finn accepts responsibility and admits his guilt, he finally does, knowing his actions drove his sister and mother to his death. The Franken is summoned directly to the execution and immolated. Finn is freed, the truth being exposed.

Types of Demons

In most stories, demons are physically manifested from a specific weakness of a living creature such as pride, ambition, lust or jealousy, and sometimes specific crimes of a person. The demons resemble the worst part of a weakness or are powered by the original crime or sin. They are typically connected to people with magical talent, but this may be because the stories originated during the Elven Hegemony in the pre-historic world.

A Death of Demons

In the stories, demons die when their originator atones for their mistake in some way. This may be confession, personal development, a trial or some other kind of repayment.

Demonic Theory

While academics and common folk laugh off the idea of demons as real, some arcane academics in recent years have begun investigating them.
