Enchantment
Enchantment is the process of adding magic to objects to fuel certain aims and goals. There are different approaches to enchanting items, usually involving different glyphic languages, but the core structure of the process remains the same.
Core Enchantment Process
To enchant an item, you require three things:- A glyph or sequence of glyphs describing the outcome of the enchantment. The more glyphs involved in the enchantment, the more complicated and prone to error the process becomes. Additionally, though there are many glyphic languages, it is a self-fulfilling law that a glyph meaning one thing may never be altered or changed within its own language. Glyphs of different languages do not interact linguistically in this process.
- Finely crafted and strong tools to carve or otherwise engrave the glyph onto the object.
- A power source to activate the enchantment. This is most commonly an enchanters own magic that they imbue into the item, but may also be magic jewels (which are themselves reservoirs of magic which must come from somewhere), cosmalite or otherwise transferred from elsewhere.
Known Languages
- The Continental Glyphic Language (CGL) is most commonly found in the Eastern and Spine Kingdoms. It is the language used by the Guild of Shapers, Oscilators and The College of Enchanters. The Continental Glyphic language has glyphs that are relatively simple to reproduce because they contain very few strokes. Thusly they are easier to engrave into smaller precious items, making the CGL more suitable for widespread commercial design.
- The Elven Intricate system is a system of enchantments used by Sun Elves and Mist Elves. Elven Intricate is the parental form of the CGL and notable for its complex system of connecting intricately designed glyphs. Because of this connection, many CGL enchanters are capable, to some degree, of reading these glyphs and figuring out what they do.
- Living Index is a collection of glyphs used by, and fiercely guarded by, the Oscilators which connect CGL enchantments to living tissue so that they may be triggered like natural impulses.
- Autonomous Inflections are a series of glyphs used by, and discovered by, Magitech enchanters at the The College of Enchanters. They interact with basic CGL glyphs to ensure repetition and autonomy. Autonomous Inflections were eventually copied by the Guild of Shapers.
Enchantment vs. Magitech vs. Augmentations
Enchantments is the parent term for these three. Magitech and augmentations are considered enchantments. However in common parlance an enchantment is one that needs to be activated somehow. It does not work autonomously with repetition, and it cannot be activated subconsciously. Enchantments need a condition to be triggered before they work. Magitech is the application of augmentations towards repetitive, autonomous and persistent tasks. They do not require activation, but rather will work endlessly towards the enchantment's goals. Autonomous Inflections (above) are required for this to work. Augmentations, as per the bodily augmentations of the Oscilators, are enchanted items that have been affixed to the natural biological, physiological and cerebral processes to act naturally as part of the body. They require no activation, but are not automated; they are used subconsciously by the user as if to replicate other bodily processes. Removing an augmentation is akin to chopping off a limb. Living Index glyphs are needed to create this type but are hoarded by the Oscilators.Amagical Enchanters & The Enchanter's Paradox
The idea of amagical people being able to enchant elicits disdain and mockery in other enchanters, but is is possible due to the Enchanter's Paradox. The paradox is that enchantments require magical power to work; but these enchantments may generate magical power to work. In fact, most enchantments do, thus why they are reusable, but they do not specifically lend their power over to creating new enchantments. Therefore if an enchanter enchanted an item to be able to draw upon its own enchantments to enchant other items, amagical enchanters may wield this item to enchant without necessarily having their own power to imbue. A knowledge of glyphs and how to draw them would be all that is required. If such an item exists, it is closely guarded and would be worth a lot.
