Cloudweave
Cloudweave is the in-world equivalent of silk, and is the primary product of all suriculture-related industries. Ustraria is the principal exporter of cloudweave, though it relies on imports of raw materials rather than producing them itself.
Silk used for cloudweave is produced via farms of ikerua moth larvae, so it is also occasionally called ikerua silk. It can be interwoven with bloodsilk, which is produced exclusively from the cocoons of Xaa. Pure bloodsilk is rare and expensive and thus, cloudweave is a far less dangerous and more affordable option. Cloudweave is also occasionally mixed with plaincloth to make it lighter and additionally more affordable.
Properties
Material Characteristics
Typically woven to have a semi-lustrous appearance; the greater the quantity of bloodsilk, the higher the luster. It is usually woven into an extremely light cloth -- as this is more practical for the majority of Icalaran climate -- but heavier weaves are sometimes produced.
Origin & Source
Ikerua moths lay their eggs near-exclusively on ikerua bushes. Though typically native to mountainous regions, the beginnings of urban cultivation in farms is proving successful.
History & Usage
Everyday use
Pure cloudweave is usually reserved for special occasion dressing of the wealthy; plaincloth blends are more common and/or used for everyday dressing. Heavy cloudweave is reserved for ceremonial use, either as garments for officials or religious dressings. The industry is not yet large enough to support cloudweave's use in soft furnishings.
