Garnery (GARR-nerr-ee)

A garnery (plural: garneries) is an in-world version of a chatelaine, a belt accessory popular amongst Icalarans of all genders. It is composed of a brooch attached to the belt from which thongs or chains hang; accessories are then attached to these thongs/chains. A garnery technically refers to the collection of accessories and their chains and the brooch, but can also refer to the entire belt due to other accessories being attached to the belt itself. This interchangeability is also due to beltiers frequently making garneries in addition to belts.   Self-sufficiency being a high virtue in all of Icalar, belts and garneries hold an important position in most adults' possessions regardless of occupation or rank. Far from a simple accessory, they are often elaborate personal statements in addition to as great a practical necessity as shoes. Common items on the garnery itself include watches, keys, charms, pocket knives, and other small tools. Wearers accustomed to frequent traveling may add compasses, containers for toothbrushes and toothpowder, basic medicines, etc.   Items are typically detached and reattached to the chains or thongs via tying or by hooks or clasps. The chains/thongs themselves vary from simple to themselves decorative, and their means of hanging from the brooch(es) varies from a basic 'single cascade' style to a 'net' style accomplished by two or more brooches. Brooches are near-exclusively decorative statement pieces.   Although uncommon, craftsmen who specialize solely in garneries rather than belts -- often the more decorative, complex, or expensive -- are known as garnworkers.
