Sufferer Moss
Sufferer moss is a common evergreen perennial ground species found in woodlands and shady rocky areas with plentiful moisture. Although edible, its most popular use is as an essential oil as one of the three sacred anointing oils used by Shepherds of Leaving when preparing a body. The oil is without scent or color and has mild preservative properties, making it additionally suitable as a carrier oil.
Its name comes from the popular folk story of a notorious complainer in a small village; those close to him warned him of complaining too much and too loudly about the smallest things, saying if he was not careful he would be given something to complain about. Ultimately he irritates the local sprites enough that they then curse him to leave moss wherever he goes, on whatever he touches, however brief. In some variations the punishment is more severe, but sufferer moss is meant to represent wherever the man rested and, more generally, as a reminder to be grateful and remain positive in the face of 'any shade'.
