How Reflections Work: a Primer
I have already talked elsewhere about the theory of planes for The Funhouse: how they overlap, and in some places one or more planes exist simultaneously in the central, main one. I have since furthered the theory on how exactly this will operate.
Nearly every square mile of this “mundane” world is in fact claimed by some other realm, sometimes by more than one, even if it is only Earth (a.k.a. the boring stuff). The world is as a result divided up into regions known as "Reflections", which reflect the characteristics of these other realms, planes, what have you. There are two main ways in which something can have an influence exerted on it: terrain themes, and the belief systems of sentient races living on the terrain.
The example of terrain themes is discussed in greater detail elsewhere, but that basically means that there is some metaphysical link between the natural phenomena (whether it be the geography, flora, fauna, weather) of the Reflection and the realm it is reflecting, which caused the link to form in the first place.
All of the gods exist, and can view all of creation at once. However, in order to keep strife down, they are only permitted (by popular agreement) to exert their influence in a region proportional to their belief/worship in said reflection. Therefore, the more a pantheon is recognized by a nation or culture, the more they pull that geographical area into their realm. More cosmopolitan areas often have many conflicting ones present, which can cause weird things to happen. Sometimes they cancel each other out and a third option for plane relationship appears (cities of technology or magic for example), or they all start to coexist and smush together. That never ends well.
Localization
This is one of the few unifying laws across all of The Funhouse. It is what inspired the name, and as such, affects every inch of space.
