SF-10 fighter
SF-10 fighters are the main class of fighters used by squadrons stationed onboard the ships of the Earth Colonial Navy. They are commonly referred to as "VR Fighters" due to the way they are operated. The fighters don't carry pilots. Instead, pilots are on the mothership and are connected to their fighters through VR sets. The goggles display all reading from the fighter's sensors and show a virtual cockpit through which a pilot can control the machine using controllers they have in their hands. Such solution was implented because of the concerns for pilot safety. A fighter is much easier to take down than a big starship.
Propulsion
SF-10s aren't designed for independent travelling and are equipped only with sublight plasma engines and small maneuvering thrusters. They provide the fighters with enough speed and agility for combat encounters.
Weapons & Armament
Fighters are armed with two plasma guns capable of firing rapidly. They are located in the short wings on both sides of the craft. Additionally, the fighters are equipped with a small railgun in the front. They also have the capability to carry bombs, but they are equipped only if they are needed.
Additional & auxiliary systems
Every SF-10 is equipped with an AI which serves as the co-pilot. It can perform evasive manoeuvres without the pilot's input and can offer aiming assist. It also informs the pilots about any objects or vessels in the vicinity and visibly marks allied and enemy craft. Each AI learns the pilot's behaviour and adapts to it. For that reason each pilot is assigned to a specific fighter.
Nice short article :D The question I have is why bother with VR at all rather than control the fighter as a kind of drone? Do they gain something more thanks to the VR?
Pilots see everything as they were in the fighter
