Apothecarist
An Apothecarist is someone who creates medicine, poisons and other such things from ingredients found in nature such as plants, fungi, minerals and even pieces of animals sometimes. They are responbsible for the recording of what useful resources can be used for these purposes on this expedition. This will prove valuable to the organization that has sent them into the Spirit World as these new resources can then be found and harvested towards the benefit of Taranel.
Apothecaries' investigation of herbal and chemical ingredients was a precursor to the modern sciences of chemistry and pharmacology. Many recipes included herbs, minerals, and pieces of animals (meats, fats, skins) that were ingested, made into paste for external use, or used as aromatherapy.
Perception
Purpose
The Apothecarist's purpose in society is to provide healing and other benefits through the combination of various naturally occurring ingredients. They are also capable of creating poisons in much the same way, perhaps as a secret side business, or perhaps to fulfill the order of some "exterminator."
For the sake of the expedition, Apothecarists hope to find out what resources this world holds for the creation of potions and poisons. A Botanist or an Anatomist might know what a plant or animal is, how it works/lives or what it can do on its own, but the Apothecarist knows how each interracts with the other.
Social Status
Apothecarists are usually held in high regard simply because they provide a medical service to towns. Traveling Apothecarists are valuable for adventurers, expedition teams, and for towns that may not have their own permanent apothecarist.
Operations
Tools
Apothacarists utilize a combination of alchemical tools and poisoner's tools to create their treatments (or poisons).
The Apothacarist for the expedition will be starting out with Poisonder's Tools which includes glass vials, a mortar and pestle, chemicals, and a glass stirring rod, all of which are necessary for creating poisons and antitoxins.
Materials
It is assumed that an apothacarist has the necessary ingredients to "fill in the blanks" when crafting particular poisons, antitoxins and eventually potions. These "basic" ingredients are things like the mentioned "chemicals" in the list of tools.
They can also spend some time to harvest particular ingredients to make more potent recipes. This involves a Survival Check.
Provided Services
Apothacarists, as mentioned, provide a variety of services which usually include healing potions, poisons, antitoxins, and various treatments for certain ailments utilizing natural resources.
A skilled apothacarist can also create specialty potions if they happen to find the necessary ingredients.
Poison Crafting
Poisons come in a variety of methods for delivery including ingested, contact, injury and inhaled. These are described in more detail in the Poisons document. As part of a long rest an apothacarist can create one vial of Basic Poison through nearby, recognizable plants, fungi, or animals. When crafting the poison they can determine if it will be for an injury, ingested, inhaled, or contact. If they would like to look for a particular ingredient to use in this basic poison they can roll a survival check. Depending on the degree of success they could end up with a slightly more potent Basic Poison. If the Apothacarist is struggling with finding their ingredients they can always get help from their friends.Poison Knowledge
While on the road, an expedition team may encounter many poisonous plants or creatures. They may also find those that have been poisoned by another plant or creature. An apothacarist, having knowledge of poisons, is capable of recognizing the effects of a poison more easily in these situations and can help determine what happened to a recent victim. In addition to this, they may be able to help save the victim if they are still alive using this same knowledge by making an antitoxin. Through their knowledge of poisons and how they interract with a body, Apothacarists can create antitoxins from the venom of the animal that may have poisoned one of their friends or perhaps a random individual. Creating these antitoxins involves having the poison in question which means finding the creature or plant that caused it. The Apothacarist's knowledge of poisons can also be used to provide assistance for the Botanist when determining if a plant might be poisonous.
