Katherine Fredericks
Born and raised in Bethlehem KY, Kat was born to a proud military family. Her older brother died in Afghanistan, and she enlisted in high school.
She did two tours in the middle east, eventually rotating home for a few years. She's started college twice since leaving the Marines, but has both times dropped out to get a second job. Her fathers ailing health, and the absence of her brother, were imperiling the family farm.
Ultimately the battle was lost. Her father passed away from Covid in 2020. Her mother, also ill, passed away a month later. Kat sold the farm and moved to Louisville.
She was still working an unfulfilling job that she hated at UPS when the world came crashing to a chaotic end. The crisis sent her thoughts to home. She still had aunts, uncles and cousins in Bethlehem.
Also, to be honest, the thought of getting out of the city and into the country seemed the smartest play also, so she packed her car and headed out. She didn't make it far though.
The city was crazy. Multiple times she had to reroute due to blocked roads. More than once she had to defend herself. She did make it out however. Her car was in rough shape though.
It died somewhere in Simpsonville. She came to a stop at a country four-way that was piled up with stopped and abandoned cars.
She started checking cars for keys, not realizing the danger she was in. First it was one, surprising her. Then it was two more. Than another pack of four, and so on. She fled crossways across the intersection, trying to outrun them. Across the way, she could see a man fighting more of them.
The two of them teamed up, and managed to survive the situation. The man, Curtis, was a local and with his help they got to a safe location.
Curtis it turns out, is one of the good ones. He offered to help her reach Bethlehem, but she saw the pointlessness of it. The idea of surviving the journey, if it was even possible, only to find dead loved ones disheartened her.
In the end, she was happy to stay secluded with Curtis. When the Domus Dei scavenge team found them, she almost regretted it. Almost, but not enough to turn down electricity and hot running water.
They settled in well at the Ranch, working hard and helping to finish up the exterior wall defenses. Curtis eventually got pulled to work with the horses, but she didn't mind. They had their evenings together and life was good. She couldn't really fathom it. Somehow she was happier AFTER the world ended.
Twelve hours after coming to the realization that Curtis Bernard was without doubt the great love of her life, she watched a shell from an Abrams tank blow his body into countless pieces of charred and shredded flesh.
Kat has been extremely quiet since the battle. She's missed no work. No public displays of grief. Not much emotion at all. She seems shell shocked. The ladies have been hovering over her for weeks, waiting for the other shoe to drop.
