Chapter 2: On the Road to Brill | Session VIII: Wilderness Survival 101 - Report

General Summary

Our companions start out down the riverbank of the Midden River. After a few hours of travel, before it gets much darker, the escaped prisoners find a useful position to set up camp. As Brachii and Leslie run further ahead to scout for any potential dangers, Scratch-On-Wood attempts to forage in the woods, only to fall and sprain his ankle. He lays there for several hours before healing himself and limping back. Meanwhile, Belladonna lounges with her companions and encourages them to find food. Haguur fishes with his hands.
  Brachii and Leslie don't find anything, but are spooked by a deer. After turning back around, everyone gathers around the fire to sleep. Leslie and Scratch take the first watch, staying up for a few hours as Leslie attempts to teach Scratch the intricacies of the Elven language. It goes...well.
  The next morning, the group heads off along the riverbank, coming across an obstacle of deep water and a high hill. Belladonna and her posse and Brachii wade through the water to head along ahead, while the rest of the team takes the longer route through the forest.
  Brachii, Belladonna, and Belladona's orc and hobgoblin are ambushed along the riverbank, but fight back, summarily killing a few hobgoblin grotto guards. As more come down the riverbank, though, the rest of the group meets up in the melee. In the fighting, Brachii knocks out one of the guards. The rest of the guards are summarily killed, though Leslie's new pseudo-dragon familiar, Eggs, notices a larger group further down the riverbank. The team decides to head into the woods to avoid further fighting.
  After travelling further into the woods and after a short rest, Brachii, Leslie, and Belladonna interrogate the hobgoblin guard, discovering that he was a part of a scouting party for a regular patrol that moves up and down the riverbank towards the grotto in the employ of the Greger family. He also informs the group that the best way to cross the river will be further along north in the shoals just outside of the valley they are in. After killing the guard and stringing him up as a warning, the team heads further through the woods, hoping to avoid the patrol.
  After traveling through the woods for some time, the team encounters a small cottage on a hill in a clearing. The path is riddled with plantlife and gardens, and seems to only be occupied by a single, old halfling. Attempting to parlay with her, Leslie sends Eggs to approach the cottage, but when the halfling notices the rest of the party down the hill, she becomes defensive and afraid. After attempting to entangle Leslie and Brachii, the halfling starts firing bolts down the hill.
  Gran Marie quickly recognizes the magic, and, in a fit, storms up the hill shouting the name Moyra. The two old women clearly know each other. After a short introductiong, Moyra lets the dozen or so escapees into her cottage and begins feeding them. Most of the team stays in Moyra's mushroom cellar, which is slightly more spacious. The session ends with the prisoners sleeping amongst fungi, wondering about their new acquaintance, and how exactly Marie and Moyra know each other.
