Chapter 4: All the Magister's Men | Session XVII: The Fist and The Fire - Report

General Summary

The session opens with Leslie and Brachii in the Chairman of the College of Engineers office, having threatened the old man with unimaginable violence if he didn't give them information about the internment of the swamp people and the construction of the warships at the Isles. The two adventurers forced the Chairman to write a resignation letter, and name Mikhail Edgewood, an old acquaintance of Leslie, his successor. The fear and cooperation of the Chairman ensured, Leslie and Brachii make their way to Mikhail's class to speak with him.
The two find Mikhail's classroom as students shuffle out, as if class had ended. Brachii asks after the professor, and a student tells the adventurers that the professor ended class early at the behest of Sir Desmond Ular, the head of the guard, who needed to speak with Mikhail. Leslie and Brachii head towards the professors office, only to find it being guarded by two guards with the war fist of Tempus emblazoned on their tunics. After failing to talk their way through the door, Leslie uses his familiar Eggs to suss out what is happening in the room beyond.
Leslie witnesses Sir Desmond interrogating Mikhail, demanding to know what the professor has been doing snooping about the Isles. The professor demurs, and, eventually, Desmond turns violent, casting Hold Person on the professor and making an attack on the Tiefling's prone body. Leslie quickly jettisons himself out of Eggs and sends him and Brachii barreling through the front door.
After a quick altercation with the two guards outside, Brachii and Leslie do brief combat with Sir Desmond, who almost incapacitates Brachii with a powerful divine strike. Leslie, Brachii, and Mikhail leap out the window, Leslie casting Feather Fall on the trio as they descend. Before leaping out, Mikhail lets loose a Fireball, destroying his office and presumably wounding Sir Desmond and the guards. The trio alight to the ground, where Mikhail pulls out a scroll of Teleportation. Fearing more guards, the group teleports towards the Thieves Guild hideout in Old Town, not knowing what to expect.
Meanwhile, Belladonna, Scratch, and their new compatriot Janica Downbridge make their way through the Isles back towards Old Town, only to find the district being set ablaze by members of Sir Desmond's Honor Guard, select knights and guardsmen wearing Tempus' sigil on their tunics. The trio briefly does battle with a few guards and a knight in an alley as their enemies set fire to some buildings, and proceed towards the Thieves Guild hideout, where they discover more enemies. Scratch, Belladonna, and Janica, however, are able to sneak past the guards and get back into the hideout, where Janica is reunited with her team and re-equipped with her arms and armor.
At this time, Brachii, Leslie, and Mikhail teleport into the market square outside the Thieves Guild, right in the fray of the Honor Guard, who immediately try to attack the group. They quickly head into the Guild headquarters, and with a legion of guards making their way towards the building, the Dungeon Bois and their new friends in the Thieves Guild defend the warehouse. The battle seems to be in their favor before a knight uses an explosive to destroy one of the walls of the Guild, at which point guards and knights rush inside. After a few tense rounds of combat, the Dungeon Bois and company arise victorious, though the burning wreckage of Old Town hardly feels like a victory. Janica signs to her thieves to depart and seek refuge in safehouses across the city while she, her lieutenant Tommy One-Eye, professor Mikhail, and the Dungeon Bois head to a safehouse in College Town. Presumably safe, the party commiserates briefly, and decides that they need to find the Magister and convince him to turn the loyal city guards against Desmond and his Honor Guard. Janica and Mikhail suggest that the Magister may not be aware of the extent of Sir Desmonds control, or the state of things in the Isles. The party elects to rest before attempting to depart in the evening towards the Magister's Hall.

Notes

Here's what happened last time on Dungeon Bois: Voyage of the Damned:   Brachii and Leslie intimidate the Chairman of the College of Engineers into revealing what he knows and giving up his position to Leslie's old acquaintance and one-time crush, professor Mikhail Edgewood. The duo attempts to meet with Mikhail, only to find him being accosted by the dastardly Sir Desmond Ular, Paladin to the war god Tempus and orchestrator of the Swamp Folk internment. After a tense altercation, Brachii, Leslie, and Mikhail leap from the window in a shower of fire, as Leslie casts Feather Fall and Mikhail casts Fireball. The group uses a scroll of teleportation to escape to the Thieves Guild hideout, only to find themselves in the middle of burning buildings and Desmond's Honor Guard setting fire to Old Town.   Meanwhile, Scratch-on-Wood, Belladonna, and the leader of the Thieves Guild, Janica Downbridge, make their way from the Isles back towards Old Town, discovering Desmond's Honor Guard ransacking the district. The trio dispatch a few guards before sneaking into the the Thieves Guild hideout, and ready themselves to defend the district against Sir Desmond's troops. When Brachii, Leslie, and Mikhail teleport into the square, the Dungeon Bois and the Bridgetown Thieves Guild do valiant battle with the Desmonds forces. Though an Honor Guard Knight manages to blow a hole in the wall of the Guild, the Honor Guard is ultimately dispatched, and the members of the Thieves Guild flee to safety.   The Dungeon Bois, with professor Mikhail Edgewood, Thieves Guild Leader Janica Downbridge, and Janica's Lieutenant Tommy One-Eye, all reconvene in a Thieves Guild safe house in College Town. Here, they hatch a plan to reach Magister Ferdinand the Clever, leader of Bridgetown, and convince him to rally the members of the guard still loyal to the city and dispose of Sir Desmond Ular and his Honor Guard, as well as free those interned in the Isles.   As night falls, the Dungeon Bois look towards the Bridgetown skyline, the Magister's Hall twinkling on the other side of College Town. What hides in the tinkerers home, and will they find friend or foe?
