Chameleon Deathclaws

With food being especially scarce in the region, even the mighty Deathclaw has made some adaptations. One genus has developed advanced iridophores to change the color of its skin, which on its own is not that uncommon across the wastes. The quality that makes them truly terrifying is their highly evolved syrinx that is capable of imitating a myriad of sounds to draw in prey. Often using cries similar to young offspring or wounded members of their prey's own species, this ambush tactic is especially effective against humans.

Although not at large as some of their cousins in the region, these creatures rival the size of most other Deathclaws from outside the area. This bulk creates problems for the cold-blooded animals in the extreme heat of the Dust Bowl, so this often causes them to either bury themselves in the sand or seek out shelters that naturally attract anything else struggling to survive in the area. Only preferring to actually hunt at night, it is rare to encounter them if proper safety precautions are taken into account, and those with the luxury of an automobile are likely never to stumble across one.

Their diet often consists of the abundant insect life living throughout the region, and although the scent of human food has been known to attract them in the past, it is always left uneaten as they refuse to consume anything that has not died recently. This does not mean that robotic entities are safe, as they have also been observed targeting the automatons first during attacks. The reason can only be speculated at, but most believe it has something to do with the lights and energy weapons that can easily spoil their cover.
