Nero's Renegades

Originally a 'Frumentary' in Caesar's Legion, the true identity of the man now known as Nero was kept secret for security purposes. Although he commonly claims to be a bastard son of the supreme leader himself, this pretender was born during an affair between a common legionary and a slave. Through a life where empathy was replaced with neglect, he began to use manipulation as a means of getting what he wanted. This was a lucrative way for him to climb the ranks, as he often would introduce his superiors to vices that he would in turn use against them to secure his position.

His practices did not go unnoticed, and before long it was decided Nero would be more use behind enemy lines. Tasked with sabotage and gathering intelligence, it was the first job he had ever had where he was rewarded for being himself. Nero delighted in sowing discent in the NCR ranks, using chems and prostitutes as his weapon of choice to break down the military discipline and encourage infighting. Enjoying these forbidden fruits himself to keep his cover, it wasn't long before he became addicted to this new lifestyle.

When finally called back from his deployment Nero began secretly recruiting his own forces from anyone that struggled to meet the Legion's standards. Not wanting to get wrapped up in Caesar's war, or face his retribution should a coup fail, Nero instead snuck his troops east under the cover of darkness one night. Unfortunately this meant traveling blind, and by the time they realized they were straying too close to a wall of sandstorms it was too late. Becoming trapped inside the Great Dust Bowl like so many others, Nero's Renegades needed to adapt to the harsh conditions to survive.

Desperate to fill his ranks, nearly half of the Renegades were former slaves promised freedom under Nero's rule. Intending to give them basic human rights in exchange for continuing to labor behind the scenes as the civilian workforce, this balance shifted significantly once they were marooned. It became clear that vehicles were vital to the survival of his nomadic tribe, and luckily for the Renegades, one man had worked on similar mechanics before he was captured by the Legion.

Not only the most valuable member of the group, but potentially the most outspoken as well, workers' rights quickly evolved into a political council that all decisions would go through for a vote. This vote didn't always overturn an official ruling, however any whisper of a strike was taken seriously and could change his decrees overnight. While not entirely ideal for his authority to be questioned so often, it afforded Nero and his military cadre many new luxuries that made them complacent.

With these new living standards the organization flourished as raiders, and although they no longer take slaves, they do allow certain wastelanders the chance to be assimilated into the tribe rather than face death. Traveling in a motor pool converted to drive on tracks, their movements are difficult to predict and harder to defend against. When food is scarce, cannibalism is common practice though it happens behind closed doors.

  • Population- <300

  • Motor Pool- Rebuilt pre-war vehicles with heavy modifications

    Accepted forms of Currency

  • Caps are often collected and used by agents wearing wastelander clothing. These members are often forward scouts, perusing shops and spending money to scope out a potential target for the Renegades. Internal trade is usually done through barter, though caps are still substituted in order to balance out any differences in value.

  • Legion Coins are not used as common currency but have other special purposes.
