The Children of Atom

A rare faith to have in the Great Dust Bowl, it is mostly held by a singular nomadic tribe that wanders the wastes in search of new initiates. Many dismiss them as con artists or nut jobs, however they do in fact exhibit a few abilities that are hard to easily dismiss. They do not wear radiation suits or any other sort of protective gear yet can survive comfortably and even thrive in environments toxic to normal humans. Although constantly subjected to high levels of radiation, not a single member has ever made the metamorphosis into a ghoul. There are even rumors that they are capable of navigating the storms, and only pass through the area when they are making holy pilgrimages or setting up new shrines.

Believing that enlightenment is gained through exposure to intense radiation, many choose to spend their lives in seclusion pondering the great mysteries of their deity, Atom. Unlike many other religious communities, outsiders are often regarded with suspicion and hostility. There are few missionaries and joining their ranks without being directly recruited is nigh but impossible for the average wastelander. Those that survive the trials and are deemed worthy must then work their way up the social hierarchy, often requiring fanatical demonstrations to earn their peers respect and trust.

Although many believe their actions lack any sanity, there is a rumor that they travel the Great Dust Bowl in search of someone important to their faith. Atom's will incarnated into a person that will make themselves known to the Children and herald a new age of spiritual discovery. This will tip the scales of power globally and end with the faithful in charge of Earth's future. Many discount this prophecy as simple nonsense, but it is hard for some to ignore given some of the unexplained happenings surrounding their followers.
