The Hive
A seemingly random amalgamation of insectoid creatures populate these underground colonies. They don’t seem to communicate directly with one another, have never been witnessed breeding, and even though the biodiversity of the community is extreme, a fight between species has yet to be observed. This has led many to believe that they are being controlled by a sort of central hive mind deeper within the nest, a mystery too enticing for the Enclave to pass up on.
Although FEV typically shoulders the blame for the more extreme examples of mutation in the wasteland, no evidence of exposure can be found in retrieved specimens. In fact what is seen on the cellular level is not unchecked chaotic growth, but surgically precise gene manipulation and splicing. Even scientists from the Eden Compound with all their pre-war research data have trouble explaining who or what could accomplish this artificially or otherwise.
Over eighty varieties have been documented, with each generation showing drastic evolutionary changes, sometimes in direct response to researchers’ tests. Each analysis of the colony renders contrasting results from the previous attempts, making establishing any kind of baseline on the organisms impossible. Isolation was determined the best course of action until a permanent solution could be found, and so the Enclave patrols the edges of this territory and keeps living things away from Hive to the best of their ability.
