The VB-01

The predecessor to the famous version built by the Enclave and later the Brotherhood of Steel, these bare bones prototypes were once cutting edge technology. The ability to take off and land vertically while still maintaining an average cruising speed of three hundred miles per hour was invaluable for deploying fresh troops to the front lines through heavy enemy fire. Early design flaws limited their usage and production much like the X-01 power armor suits however, and it was rare to see one before the bombs fell.

Adaptations were made throughout the years to keep them operational and compensate for the rushed calculations in the original designs. While a handful could even perhaps compete with the VB-02 in terms of performance, the general collective of The Dunwich Society vertibirds are in different states of sub-optimal condition. Despite their best efforts to preserve the pre-war machines, each deployment in the harsh regional environment takes its toll.

Some pilots converted their aircrafts for hauling cargo and removed much of the armor plating and weapons so they could move more troops or munitions to front line positions. Others preferred speed and agility for aerial bombardments and dogfights, fine tuning their aerodynamics and weight accordingly. Thickly armored cumbersome vertibirds are all but phased out, with several being reserved for transporting important people and cargo, although they usually have support from other aircraft.
