Vault 212
Thankful for their safety from nuclear annihilation, most citizens of Vault 212 never questioned the true purpose a government funded organization would have for offering them free housing during the worst resource crisis in recorded history. Selected from all walks of life, the key factor in qualifying for a room here seemed to be an innocent physical examination and DNA collection. It wasn't until long after the bombs fells and the Vault was sealed that things started to seem a bit suspicious to the residents.
At first many assumed they were simply paranoid, the facilities and sustenance provided was much better than what they were getting on the outside. Disputes were settled with official proceedings and new laws were even passed by a democratic vote apporved by the Overseer. It wasn't until the second and third generations that panic began to spread, as at least one third of all births were accompanied by some kind of genetic mutation.
Far beyond what could normally happen through exposure to radiation, it would take them over a hundred years to finally uncover the mystery. Exposed to FEV in vitro or through 'standard' innoculations at the doctor, by the time they overthrew their Overseer it was too late. Many would suffer life-long conditions, perhaps even passing them on their offspring if they were lucky enough to make it through the process without losing their fertility.
When the door finally did open to the world outside, it was the Greenskins that greeted them. Not as brothers in arms or fellow victims of science gone wrong, but as prey. Managing to keep them from entering the Vault itself, hasty plans were made to thwart these post-war abominations. Finding their enemy more cunning then they could ever anticipate, they did the only thing they could think to do to slow them down. Sending their G.E.C.K. secretly into the wasteland to be hidden until they deal with the looming threat of invasion, the rest plan a final stand to guard the remainder of the FEV and the data associated with it, many hoping that it can one day be used to reverse their conditions.
