Herbalist

Apart from the hardcore anti-magickers in and sympathetic to Haven, magic is a quietly accepted reality of the world. People may openly criticize its pollution and poisoning of the realm, but it is so wide-spread and convenient that very few people are 100% removed from magic. That is why Magicians and others who use magic operate under the guise of other professions, but there is one magic affiliated career that does not have to hide: the herbalist.   Because magic is at the foundation of the entire realm (even though reisdents may not realize it), so much of the Upper Realm holds magic within its very make-up. Some plants and animals more than others though. Herbalists are essentially nature specialists, the people who make knowing what effects plants and animal byproducts may have on mortals. It is much like a natural apothecary, an they are often visited for remedies. They usually include the plants and animals known to have magical effects as well, such as the impenetrable filly layers or arboria spores. Even though magic is so openly hated in the Upper Realm, and those who use it even more so, there are less taboos about studying it (even the Heroes of Haven study magic as part of their training, not to use it but for the purpose of defending against it). Herbalists do not deal in runes, and therefore their profession is typically seen as sufficiently non-magic, but its affiliation does earn it a low place within society.   Interestingly, most herbalists are not secretly Magicians as one might expect. Magicians certainly know many of the things that herbalists do (though likely a more cherry-picked knowledge based on the goals of their House), but most stray away from public herbalist professions because of the scrutiny it brings. When magic goes wrong in the town, the herbalist is often the first to draw the suspicious eye because of their association with magic and therefore any real Magician daylighting as an herbalist is likely to be exposed. The safest people to be herbalists are those with an interest in magic but little to no real ability in it.
