Mortals

The original Mortals came from the Lower Realms like all sentient life, but unlike the Fey or Elves or the other classification of immortals, the Mortals are not confined to a single race. It is actually a name used for anyone who is born without magic in their blood. In every race, there are some who are born without the ability to do magic. They have no magic in them, despite their parentage, and no matter how hard they try to channel or shape the magical energies of the world, even in the Upper Realm where it is infinitely easier to accomplish, they simply cannot do it. All of these people are Mortals.   This inability to do magic is a genetic trait present in all races, but it is most prominent in humans. There are humans who are capable of strong magic, and many who are immortal, but the number of humans who are incapable of magic at any level is over fifty percent. There are groups of humans more likely to have magic or more likely to not, but these distinctions existed in the Lower Realms, and most humans in the Upper Realm were reshuffled and the past cultural and ethnic divisions have been replaced by the modern ones which are less likely to follow the genetic patterns of magic.   The modern Mortals, like their ancestors, are still a group of people from any race who are incapable of magic. In the past, being a Mortal was a badge of shame, but in the modern Upper Realm, it is highly valued in some places like Haven. (In the past and Lower Realms, it actually used to have the same connotations as being a Dagphi today does.)   The modern Mortals control the city of Haven. They hold all the seats of power and have made great strides in making their city so strongly anti-magic. Because of this power and prestige, and because magic is seen as taboo across the entire Upper Realm, there is a strong desire among many to be seen as a Mortal. Many claim to be it even though they are capable of magic (the fact that they haven’t tried and therefore haven’t done any noticeable magic makes them believe they are Mortals), and therefore the modern classification of Mortals is much wider than it used to be. It holds many people who are not true Mortals, but are removed enough from ancestors who were true immortals.
