Suckers

Suckers are a weedy runner plant consisting of a thin stalk and five petaled flowers. This plant is known to pop up in places of high magical concentration because it feeds on magic. mMagic of any kind really, but because of magic’s standing in society, it is often seen as a bad omen or indicator of magic-users.   Although water and nutrients are also required by this plant, it thrives in areas with high magic, specifically areas where the land is highly saturated with it. (Despite popular belief, it does not actually react to magic-users themselves. When magic is expressed through runes, the magic is confined to the script and inaccessible to the plant. In the form of immortally-infused or Dagphi blood and perhaps magical plants it can cannibalize it does take an interest, but there is no immediate reaction to either. With time, it is a far better indicator of relation to immortals than whether or not someone actually uses magic.) The plant sucks up the magic (hence its colloquial name), much like any other nutrient, through its specialized root pores and uses it in its own growth.   The high presence of magic is usually indicated by an array of flowers. These flowers are highly sought after by those who use and practice magic for they are concentrations of certain types of magic, though they are so small that several must be used to achieve any effects on humans. Pink flowers are considered the most beautiful of the flowers it produces, appearing in a pastel shade of salmon, but that is largely because they produce attractive magic, used in potions of any kind that require an altering of desire. (Note, they do not affect a personality to be overcome by desire, but only alter what one might find beautiful or interesting. It is more of a perspective shifting magic.) Blue flowers are known to soothe, often used in healing remedies, while yellow flowers are used to invigorate, such as in vitality potions. But the purple flowers reinforce the negative public view of this plant because they are the receptacle for the controlling magic, the kind of magic at the root of possessions or forcing someone’s will. It is seen as a dirty magic by all, but very necessary in small quantities for potions to have any real lasting effect. A person cannot be healed by blue flowers if they do not want or think they can be healed, so a smidge of purple must be added to convince them it is possible. All colors of Suckers are staples in any Magician, magic-user, or herbalist’s arsenal of flora.   Suckers are most frequently found at the boundaries of wandering wilds, drawn to the unstable magic of the area but unable to survive inside the ever-changing habitat. Although this plant is not generally welcome or desired, their presence at the edge of wandering wilds is what keeps the magic in check, stabilizing the border so that there is a clear line to cross between regular land and wandering wild. They are given an undeserving bad reputation despite playing a vital role in the stabilization of the chaotic magic in the Upper Realm.
