Wandering Wilds

Wandering wilds are expanses of land typically influenced by an arcane landmark and characterized by their shape-shifting terrain. Land around the central landmark is unstable and prone to rapid shifts in texture and make-up. From plains to mountains to lakes to caves, most wandering wilds are capable of taking roughly seven different states of being, but over fifty terrain types have been recorded. It is commonly accepted that wandering wilds are caused by the magical residue of arcane practices influencing the environment. The stronger the act, the wider or more erratic the wandering wild is. The largest wandering wild in existence is the Orole (oh-roh-ley) Wilds found in the northeastern regions of Arionas (air-ree-oh-nah-s), believed to be the site where the great goddess Kamora gave birth to the realms, but the region is extremely volatile. None who have entered in search of this answer have ever returned.   The change from one terrain to another is not instantaneous, but can vary depending on variables present. Preliminary research shows that the presence of certain substances, magics, or even people can bring on the terrain shift, usually in a predictable manner. For example, the Modorn (mow-dorn) Wilds in central Cuial (coo-ee-al) will reliably shift into sandy desert at the detection of copper within its border, unless it was previously a forest, then it will become rocky. There is a researcher in eastern Novosrta (noh-vor-sta) who, when entering the Dologia (doh-loh-gee-uh) Wilds will consistently trigger the terrain to become scrubland (she has been transferred to the Freeam (free-am) Wilds where it seems to have no reaction at all to her presence). An increase in the quantity of triggering materials will usually quicken the pace of transformation, but not always.   Not all wandering wilds are completely inaccessible. Wilds make gradual shifts between environments, typically with significant indications and time before their next state. For example, a mountain transforming into a lake will often shrink and grow large watery deposits along its surface prior to becoming entirely water. Because of this feature, many groups may enter the wilds for short periods of time for resource extraction, exploration, study, or recreation, and return at the first sign that the terrain is shifting to something they did not prepare for.
