Zandria Forest
The Zandria Forest is unlike any other forest found in the Upper Realm. For one, the stories about it are grim and supernatural, but it is also bound into itself by some kind of uncommon magic. Who upholds this magical boundary is unclear, but all the nearby farmers and the residents of Border are thankful for it because it keeps the nightmare monsters inside.
There are stories of man-beasts and shadow-people inside Zandria. Carnage and trickery are popular among those tales and not even children tell the stories around campfires because they are too close to being true. Every so often someone glimpses a movement just beyond the boundary trees that feeds the imagination and sends Border into a frenzy of magical protections and whispers.
It is no urban legend of bored imagination that gives such power and terror to this place. Each tree at the edge of the forest bears a rune of protection, glittering with magical potency and indicating its upkeep. And every year new trees pop up in the boundary, expanding its reach, but no one would dare chop away at those woods for fear of breaking the containment and releasing the creatures inside. Their only consolation is that the forest knows to grow away from the cities and plots of land, avoiding the people as much as they avoid it, except people constantly worry about the day when it runs out of scrubland and has nowhere unpopulated left to use.
Very few have ever been inside the forest and even fewer return. Many of these people are Heroes, the anti-mages who spread their practices by attempting grand accomplishments without any magical aid. But locals of Border and the nearby farms know that it is suicide to enter that territory without magical protections. Of those who come back out, most admit to using magic in some form or another, and those who deny it are widely believed to be lying.
